Anyone knows about whats the job market for soft tissue/bone fellowship? dose any place besides giant medical center really need anyone trained in the field? I find it is a very interesting field and many pathologists feel uncomfortable signing out those cases, but I see zero job posted on pathologyoutlines.com on bone and soft tissue 🙂

I would think you are restricted to academic centers if you want to do soft tissue alone. If you want to go private I think you have to signout soft tissue in addition to general surgpath. Private practice I would bet does not see much soft tissue unless you are a dermpath only practice. Even then, I dont know the volume of soft tissue these dermpath only practices see. That's why you don't see many practices looking for soft tissue because the volume isnt there.

doubt it'd hurt you if you were looking for a private practice job, but you're right that no one aside from a large academic center is going to seek out such candidates.

Go ahead and do the fellowship. Being able to sign out general surg path and also being the group expert in a surgical subspecialty (whether it's the now "hot" GI/GU or other options like lung, gyn/breast, bone/soft tissue) has been and I imagine will continue to be marketable for pathologists. This will make you more competitive for either academic or private practice jobs- most private groups are large now and get many complex specimens. If you're not ready for independent surg path signout do a surg path fellowship before your bone/soft tissue fellowship. Most, if not all, the best private jobs are not the ones listed on the internet job sites. They don't have to advertise because of our oversupply.

As far as my statement: most, if not all, the best private jobs are not the ones listed on the internet job sites- others please post if you disagree with me on this point.

I agree with the above response. If you like it - do it.
I am doing a cytopath fellowship (because I like it AND for marketability purposes) followed by bone and soft tissue (I like it and don't really care about marketability).
