Hey,

Is there any method for determining solublility for O.Chem (meaning which functional groups are soluble in what solvent)...

Can anyone explain what we need to know regarding solubility for O.Chem?

Compounds that can hydrogen bond will always dissolve in water.

Ions will also dissolve in water.

If the compound cannot hydrogen bond or be ionized, it will probably not dissolve in water.

Like dissolves like.
 
compounds are readily soluble when the oxygen or nitrogen to carbon ration is 1:5 or lower. That is , one oxygen will cancel out up to 5 carbons. I'll check on this in my organic book when i get home but i think that is correct.

what about ether being nonpolar?

i guess it cant donate and accept H bonds
