I am currently in a very bad situation. Over the summer I decided to take organic chemistry with the mentality to get it over with. I finished the first session with a B but the second session I came away with a C. The course comprised of 2, 28 question exams each worth 50% of your grade. I received a B on the first exam but I have yet to see the results of my second exam. However, after checking my transcript it looks like I got a C in the class. I am very worried over this grade. My gpa went down to a 3.4 because of this grade. I want to retake the course, but the only way I would be allowed to is if I talked the teacher into lowering my grade from a C to a D+ (only d's and lower are allowed to retake). I was wondering what some people would suggest that I do? Should I retake the course? Leave it as it is? Thanks for anyones input, I'm really worried.

That sucks about what happened to you in summer school.
I would talk it over with the professor and double check to see if you can take it over even with a C. I don't think it would be good to lower the grade to D+. That's just going to deflate your gpa and more important your science gpa even more. I would double check to see if you can take the course over again with the C. Maybe if the professor grants permission then you can have an exception to the rule.
Other options to consider:
-Consider taking the course again at another school even if you can't transfer the credit into your school.
-Consider taking an upper level chemistry course like Organic Chemistry III or something to balance the C.
-avoid getting C's in the future; if it means taking an easier course load to balance out those science grades, then by all means do that.

In the future, don't just take premed req's to get them done and over with, because they count a lot, not just for medical school admissions but also for the MCAT. You want to make sure you learn the material well because it will show up on the MCAT. That was a mistake I made in Physics 1, taking it with Organic Chemistry. I could have definitely gotten an A in Physics 1 but I didn't think ahead like I did with Physics II. Know what you are getting into.

Leave it be. Lots of people get into med school with a C in organic.
I would think it would look worse to have the D and to then retake it than to just have the C.
Remember that when AMCAS averages your GPA they will include that D in the calculations. So say you make a B second time round.. that's the same as your C now.

like the other poster mentioned, in the future dont try to get the courses done with just so you can rush through it... it doesnt give you that much of an edge. for myself i ended up doing not great in physics I after my freshman year. i took physics II during my junior year and i breezed through it with an A --- and the 2nd half is supposed to be harder . in the future only take the core classes during the summer sessions and leave the bigger classes during the year (i advised some other freshman to do the same but they decided to go ahead and rush through and take the orgo in the summer... dont think it went well for most of them)

Mega said it best!

let it be!

even if you retake it, they will still just average the two grades together and the adcoms will see both grades.

raise your GPA and do really well from now on, get a high score on your MCAT, and you will be virtually the perfect applicant, and they wont even question your C in the second half of Orgo.

remember, adcoms know that anyone can retake a course and get a MUCH higher grade in it, you would have an unfair advantage having already taken the course, so it doesnt really show what you are capable of if you just keep retaking courses to get higher marks.

although organic is a very important course, remember that it is just one course in your overall science GPA, physics is also a 5-unit course and if you do well in that and all ur other bio classes and pre med stuff, that C will stand out as a fluke
