So, originally my plan was to graduate with a degree in Genetics and minor in history. (i have one more year) However, now I am interested in applying to Massachusetts Worchester, which requires intro. to sociology and also University of Southern California, which requires another communications course other than the public speaking course that all the other california schools accept.

I cannot seem to fit in those two courses, without dropping my minor (need 4 more courses)

Any advice?? Should I just drop my minor and go ahead and take those pre-reqs? Or should I do both?? Any suggestions would be helpful.

Well, I would say it depends on which is more important to you. If Pharmacy is your goal, drop the minor. If Pharmacy is just something your thinking about doing, finish the minor. You can always go back and finish the prepharm requirements.

Just my opinion...having a minor is useless, and sounds like you need those other pre req courses. Drop the minor.

Yea, I heard that minor will not help with any graduate school. That is what my health officer told me (He is one of the chair person for UCI med. School). Any who, if you are serious about pharmacy, then drop your minor and finish your pre-requist.

By the way, I am planning to apply to USC. Isn't it lame how you have to take another communication course. Blah, I already took public speaking course.

I agree with the person who said if pharmacy is something you're just thinking about, then stick with the minor. I don't know why people think having a minor increases your chances of getting into a program, I see it as expanding your knowledge on something that interests you. It increases your subject knowledge on other areas, and I think history is great because it's different from the sciences.

Think of the reason you started that minor, because it interests you, right? Not because it would help you get into grad school. You have plenty of time to finish pharm pre-reqs.

Pharmacy is my goal and history is just something that seemed interesting. But I think that if I drop it, then I can apply to more schools (at least the two that I listed above). Thanks again 🙂

I agree P-Dogg. Two years ago when they had a grad/professional fair on campus, I asked the USC lady why they require the other communications course. Her response was that since pharmacists mostly deal with one on one interaction, that the other communications course is more helpful. That is why they require that one instead of public speaking. eeh, oh well 🙂

sorry for bumping up such an old thread.. but I was wondering... is a minor really useless? I have a minor in economics and I took a class 2 quarters ago on Health Economics.. I was banking on the fact it would set me apart just a little. 😕

Hey luckycloud5, I just graduated from USC undergraduate and spent the past semester working out the prereqs. It was making me frustrated because the UC's require public speaking while USC wants interpersonal communications. UCSF and UCSD are way more strict about their prereqs, so what I would suggest you do is to contact USC and ask them if your public speaking course is okay. I have to take public speaking still (post-bac) and I emailed Cristina Arteaga ([email protected]) with the description/syllabi of the course I wanted to take, and she approved it! So don't sweat about taking another speech class, just ask her. Esp if the class is a general speech class that includes personal and public speech, it will probably be okay.
