I was hoping someone could offer some advice on purchasing a good quality clipper....I was hoping to get it now for shaving my mom's cat, but I thought it would probably be a good idea to invest in a really good quality one for vet school (and after) as well.

Any thoughts on whether I would need it in vet school or where to shop for them at?

Thanks 🙂

Clippers are not essential for vet school (at least at ISU) since they're supplied whenever we need them. IIRC we use Oster here. As far as where to find them, veterinary supply companies may be the best place to look -- but I haven't shopped around for them at all, so I could be wrong.

Hope that helps!

Oster A5's are the best. They last longer than all the imitations.

You won't need them for vet school though.

They've always used either Oster or Wahl where I've worked... but I can't remember which models. The cheaper ones you find at Wal-Mart or most pet shops won't be sufficient for extensive clipping on thick-coated dogs. My aunt purchased a $70 kit for me to buzz her Australian Shepherd with a few years ago, and the results were not pretty. (And pretty much killed the clippers!)

One of my cats hates being brushed and gets the occasional mat around his ruff area. To de-mat him, I actually bought a cheap-o pair of Conair human clippers for $9.99 at a discount store. I've had them for close to eight years now, and they are still going strong. (They may or may not have clipped a couple of humans over the course of their lifetime, too. 😳)

If you're set on something substantial, I'd check with a veterinary or grooming supply company... maybe ask a few local vets and/or groomers what they prefer?

(ETA- While cheap clippers may buzz through cat hair pretty effortlessly, I'm not sure how the results compare on a cosmetic level... I've never gone the lion cut route for Tyson. I just use them for quick, easy removal of the tiny mats he gets around the ruff when he's blowing his coat.)

Thanks for the advice guys! The cat I want to shave is actually a short hair, but has a ridiculously severe shedding problem causing him to throw up hairballs constantly even with the use or hairball food and catlax. I'm mostly looking for something quiet and that obviously won't get too hot. I guess I'm just trying to decide if I should invest in a pricey one or not...guess I'll need one eventually anyway, even if not until after vet school.
