I wanted to know what are may chances to get a residency in G. Surgery.
I'm an US resident IMG, 33 y/o. I finished my pediatric surgery residency in my country. I moved to the US for personal reasons and decided to start all over again. I know the road ahead is hard for me, but I hope I could work as a surgeon or even better as a pediatric surgeon. My scores step 1 234/95 and step 2 229/93. I have only 1 LOR from US. My question is whether should I go thropugh a preliminary year or should I try to go straight into G Surgery. So I was wondering if someone could help me with some guidance and where to apply.

Hey dude,

You have pretty solid scores; however, being an international grad things are very competetive these days. You definately need more than 1 LOR. Have you thought about perhaps doing some clinical research at a well renowned institute? By doing that, not only do you 1. gain substantial experience, but 2. you make some solid connections, which are just additional sources of LOR's, which are invaluable. Furthermore, 3. if you make a solid impression and get to know the PD, you even have a shot at that place.

I think with your little experience in the U.S, and limited LOR's, you should consider either doing some kind of clinical research, or obervership experience, the latter being not as strong.

Gen surgery is not all that competetive anymore, (although, where you go obviously matters in terms of competitiveness) so I think you have a solid chance, just have to beef up that resume--you know, put some salt, some pepper, even add some chillis to it, did I mention green peppers?

I guess I didn't answer the OP's orig question about transitional year or categorical spots. Sorry, I am not in a position to answer that as I don't have much experience with that. Maybe someone else can comment.
