Here are a few basic questions I would like to ask from current dental students, residents, and dentists.

1) I know each class might have a didactic section which is either graded or P/F/Honor, but how do they grade your practical skills in classes such as waxing, endo, restorative, etc? Do you get P/F, and especially Honors for your practical skills as well?

2) How hard is it to learn waxing skills?

3) Is it ok to apply to more than one specialty program at the end of D3 (i.e ortho and endo)? If so, is this something common, and is it looked down upon by the adcom?

4) Is it ok to apply to a GPR program at the same time you are applying to a specialty program, so that in case you don't get in any specialty program, you can at least do a GPR for one year?

5) How important is it to read the books in Dental school in order to be on top of the class? I have had superb success (Almost always scoring in top 10 in my science classes of 300 students) in my undergrad courses by taking very detailed notes in class, and only referring to the book for the difficult topics. Is this possible in dental school, or I should be hitting the books thoroughly?

Finally, thanks for helping out.

1. Every school is different, but as a general rule, you take practical exams that are graded for each procedure you learn.

2. Different for every person, but waxing is only one of many skills you will have to acquire.

3. No, it is not ok.

4. Yes, many people apply to GPR/AEGD programs as a backup.

5. Again, depends on the school and the course, so I can't really answer that.
