Before you decide to go to USC, here are some facts that you want to consider before you dedicate 4 yearrs here.
- graduation rate: 2004 87%, 2005 76%, 2006 37%, 2007 18%

- Junior and senior students are struggling to get chairs. Many meetings have been held since June, 2007 and the situation is not improved.

- 90% (or I should just say most) students are unhappy/stressed to the competency exams. They all are very difficult to pass, and this is one of the reasons that most students can't graduate on time.

- Still now, there are 2005, 2006, and 2007 students at the school. It it simple that the administrator blames there students as lazy ones. However, is it true according to the graduation rate?

- Is there any help if you can't graduate on time? NO!

Since the school has neglect the students' voice, I should let you guys know these facts before you decide to come.

could you explain what makes this guy a troll?

wrong call buddy.

is this seriously what you guys do? just randomly pick someone to name troll and without any reason for doing so?

I ask why the OP was called out because I thought there was more to it than the information he presented.

I don't know where he found his info but the financial aid guy said the same thing on my interview day. When questioned by an interviewee about how many graduate on time, the financial aid guy just got a weird smirk and says "I probably shouldn't be telling you this ... 18% graduated on time last year..."

Seriously, this is what I was told from USC directly too (I called them). They told me that the 18% graduation rate is true.

Now some ****** claims that I am the OP with a different username, just because the OP has just registered to write this post and because I said that the 18% provided by the OP is indeed true. That's so ******ed that I am not even offended by it.

To OP, thanks for sharing the info which some people try to discredit, when the school themselves admit it. I can definitely see that you are a current USC student who is trying to help others.

First of all this subject has been discussed over and over again. I think it pops up every other week and people love to bring it up and beat the dead horse one more time. Ebull's graphic explains it all. A troll is basically a person that goes around posting controversial garbage or trying to irritate people, i.e. starting threads like this or one like "Can we report illegals?"

You mean like say, posts complaining about posts which have been rehashed over and over again in other posts ?

This is the first time that I have seen these stats about USC

18%'s too low a number for credibility. and few admissions directors will openly admit it if it's true. they'll try to restate it in another way, at least. there is no credibility in this thread. let it die.

I have been here for a while now and believe have posted true facts about my school; most of the graduation rate numbers I have posted are very similar to the OP, he/she is not lying and are the real situation at SC. I am not lazy, in fact I am probably one of the hardest working students here at school. However there is very little I can do when I can't schedule chairs for my patients when 300 other students are trying to get chairs also.

The tried implementing a new program for this situation and all it did was back us up more; guess what...where back to the "old way" of scheduling patients. Want to know what that technique is: you have to come here at 7:30am in the morning and try beating your classmates for chairs by scheduling electronically. Basically you can book as many chairs as you want (rarely there are any chairs available by the way) even though you don't have patients and steal it from anybody that does need it. Any day you schedule is for 3 weeks from that day...so if you can't find anything...well...you're screwed. If you have a buddy they schedule for his other buddy so they secure chairs...it is a freaking chaotic nightmare

Competencies are incredibly hard and besides chair availability is one sole reason people don't graduate on time. Nobody helps you around here and if you happen to be incompetent in some area, faculty won't seat down with you and help you all they do is send you to remedial with the class previous to yours and have you do what they're doing.

Predents, if you are really thinking about USC, really, really, think again; this school refuses to change the administration and instead blame all of us the students for the poor graduation statistics. Don't make the mistake of your life; most of us SC students that post here feel there is a necessity to let YOU guys know about the nightmares and frustrations that will await for you if you happen to choose sc dental.

Please STAY AWAY FROM USC DENTAL

Read the post above.
Or better, talk to the USC admissions.

You're funny 🙂

then go around the poorer areas of town and post some fliers advertising low cost dental care and leave your contact info. tell them to ask for you when they come. if you need patients, go get them. pretend for a second you're a new dentist who need patients to sustain your own living. you know they're out there. you know they need care. now be proactive and get the job done. less passive complaining, and more creative, proactive work. when you're a dentist, will you sit there and wait for patients also?

But you initially said that the number 18% has absolutely no credibility. You talk like an idiot, dude..

You meant to say "besides, chair availability is NOT the only reason people don't graduate on time" right?

18%'s too low a number for credibility. and few admissions directors will openly admit it if it's true. they'll try to restate it in another way, at least.

This grad rate fact was addressed at my interview session, and the admissions person spun it like this:

Even with the ~20% of students graduating in May/June, ~95% graduate by the end of the summer. The additional months will be at a greatly reduced tuition (a couple thousand), so the financial setback will be primarily living expenses.

Well at least you get to live in CA for four years!!! It will be worth it! j/k....

things change, dork. so I didn't believe a far-fetched number at first. who believes such horrid numbers at first glance without questioning it except those extremely gullible?

and few go to USC because it's their top choice. they go there b/c they didn't get in anywhere else. you know there're lots of students desperate to become a dentist. for them, it's either graduate late or not become a dentist at all. USC'll continue to fill up their class. those who decide to go there should go there prepared to self-study and put extra efforts to overcome the barriers the schools put up. sitting back and not try to actively overcome those challenges mean that you'll spend extra years there. ...and it's a very expensive school

So why are you bashing anyone here? This thread is to inform anyone who thought they wanted to go there- that this shouldn't be their top choice (or high choice) school.
This thread wasn't created to insult USC students or call them lazy, so don't suggest that. I find it difficult to believe that only 18% of the class has any motivation whatsoever, there must be a problem with the system (as mentioned). Your arguments aren't helping the thread at all.

"graduation rate: 2004 87%, 2005 76%, 2006 37%, 2007 18%"

If these rates are indeed real, I can't understand HOW the graduation rate could have gone down SO much in just a FEW years... what changed????? 😕

I agree that it is the problem of the systhem rather than that of the students, when only 18% graduate on time. Only an extremely gullible person would believe USC's excuse (that it's the students' fault).

Not that it is the exact reason, especially with the clinical aspect looking like the biggest hurdle, but they did overhaul their entire curriculum from the normal lecture format to PBL.

This drastic change does correlate with the drastic drop.

From what I recall from previous threads on this topic, it has nothing to do w/ the introduction PBL but rather the overhaul of the clinic system?

Something like preceptors are more picky, less time to work w/ patients...I forget what exactly so I'll let a current USC student answer it.

During my interview there the admissions department confirmed those statistics; although I think they said that all of those who did not graduate on time did finish by the end of summer.

:meanie: i'm bored and looking to start some trouble

I am a student from USC. I post this because I want to inform those of you who are super interested in USC like me that re-consider it after you know the facts. I don't try to insult my school. I will graduate from USC anyway, but these barriers make most of our students very stressed. Especially for anyone has family, think about if you can afford to graduate late.

For those put "troll, ..., and ...." stupid words, you can disagree what I said even they all are facts, but don't say something sounds unprofessional.

I only post on stuff when I know it is true for sure... So I'm going to call USC tomorrow morning and find out once and for all... And if you don't believe what I find out look at my previous posts they're all credible... I personally don't really believe the statement because i really want to go to USC badly but I'm going to call, find out for sure, and let everyone know...

could you also please ask them if I was accepted? I mean... since you're calling them anyways

So I called the admissions office... They told me they didn't have an exact value but 18-20% seems extremely low and is likely incorrect... They referred me to the student affairs office for an exact number... I'm going to call them tomorrow and find out an exact number but for now I don't think this number is realistic...

It's already been established by several current students that 18% is accurate, as well as some of the above people who've interviewed. A good portion of those people probably graduated a semester later as well.

Thats very unfortunate.....

Yeah, in our interview, they indeed admitted that their 4 year graduation rate is pretty low. However, they told us that over 90% of the class graduates after one more semester. I think there is pros and cons regarding USC. I should have talked to 3rd/4th year students b/c the person I talked to (1st year) seem to like it a lot. I guess USC's alumni network is very strong and it seems to be very easy to get a job. But of course, getting a job after graduating from other d-school is pretty easy as well.
