Hello, my name is Jason Tia. Im currently only a undergraduate student, and a biology major. My hope is to be accepted into Dental school in a few years, however i know some extra curriculars are a major plus. I've never had one single dentist so im not close to ANY, i dont even know where to begin finding some sort of feild experience or volunteer work. Seems as though you need a liscense for everything except for maybe being a secretary in a dental office. I currently reside just south of Boston...if anyone has any suggestions on how i could gain some practical experiece, shadowing, ect., paid or not, please let me know. Tommorow i will be calling hospitals and Tufts medical center to see if they have any volunteer positions available...Opening up the yellow pages and calling dental offices seems..odd to me. Why would someone put that kind of trust in a stranger. Anyhow, if anyone could help me out, let me know, please, thank you.

Pretty much every single dentist I have ever talked to was totally cool with kids coming in and shadowing. They probably wont let you do anything but shadowing is important and some schools have particular numbers of required hours. If your university has a campus dentist this might be a good place to start, they might let you come in or have a dentist buddy who will. As far as volunteer opportunities I'd contact your pre-health office and the local community clinic, they might have some ideas. Also if you get to know some dentists and they like you, they might offer you a job, you never know.

And I forgot, there is an organization called International Service Learning you might want to check out (islonline.org) I'm going on a trip in a few days so I can't yet speak personally but some friends said it was fantastic
