I am a M3 and have been looking at obgyn programs and notice that some programs have a night float system. some are really confusing as to how this works. it appears that in some places when you are on your night float month that is all you do- work nights from 5pm to 7am and maybe 1 weekend day. other places it seems that if you are on night float you work your regular day in whatever rotation you are on and work nights- q whatever but then after that month you dont' have to work nights again until your night float months come around again. have people found that this night float idea seems to make the hours more manageable? what is the more common modle of the ones on mentioned above?

on a separate note- how difficult are REI programs to get into?

night float at my school is what you posted int he first scenario - thats all you do, you're not on in the day except for one day a week, its like the opposite of call.

rei is very competitive

Night float for us is Sun-Thurs 9pm until 930am for 6 weeks each year. We sign out the Board at 830 am then have an hour of didactic/rounds with the perinate.
Our only overnight call is Fri or Sat night. The rest of the year you have an average of 4 "short callls" (530pm-9pm) a month and 2-3 weekends (which can be Fri, Sat or Sun) but Sun is only until 9pm when NF show up. A little confusing at first but it is a great schedule!!
