Lately Ive been looking into professional degrees. Denistry is something that looks very promising. I started out looking at Optometry, but there have been very negative comments made about the profession and it has me kind of 'spoked'.

I just have a few Questions:

1) How hard is it to become a Oral/maxillofacia Surgeon? Can you work part time after you get your inital DDS degree, while getting the Oral/max surgeon status.

2) Is the Denistry profession on the rise, or fall?

O.K. now that I have been a jerk about your spelling I'll see if I can help a little.

1. Becoming an oral surgeon is a pretty difficult journey. You have to be at the top of your dental school class. Most people think this will be easier than it is because they are used to just "floating" to the top in high school and college. You have to realize that you will be in a class of the brightest and most hard-working people the school could find. Unless you went to a super cutthroat undergrad you have no way of understanding what the competition can be like in dental school.

Some residents I know moonlight during medschool if they choose to pursue the MD degree. But during the actual residency I hear there isn't usually enough time to wipe your butt much less have a part time job. If you want first hand info you should head on over to the dental residency forums.

2. Dental income is at an all time high. Many are predicting a huge increase in demand for dentists in the next 15-20 years. Whether that will come to fruition or not is still up for debate. In any case, now is a great time to be getting into the dental field. Just be sure you really like dentisry and not just the money; this road is too hard if you don't at least like what you are doing.
