I had a few of uncles and parents who described the pre-match process. "Hmmm Dr. X. we like you and we would like to offer you a position, we also have a good applicant coming next Monday and so I will give you until this Friday to decide." It was not conducive to shopping around. Now we have the opposite problem. Way too much time and effort spent to find a few good interns. I wish I had the guts to go out of the match. I would save hundreds of hours work and I think I could lock down some good people. The students are equally over burdened and a sure thing would be attractive early on.
but then would the world be flat?
At least we lessened some of the burden with online interviewing this year.
I don't anticipate us ever going back. How about you?
I think my PD is eager to get back to in-person interviews. I'm eager to get back to the free lunches with candidates. Would consider supporting continued online interviews if the free lunches continued without the interviewees. I really think a better model would be one that allows ms4s enough time to do audition rotations at 3 or 4 programs combined with online interviews. It would significantly cut down on travel expenses (compared to in-person interviews at 8-15 programs) and would give programs a more in-depth look at candidates and how they might fit in/perform.
My prediction is that zoom interviews are here to stay. My hope is that we will have both options and locals can come see the hospitals, clinics, and neighborhoods. I guess one could wonder if someone living in the same city decided not to show up live is showing some lack of interest, but flying coast to coast several times will probably end.
I'll buy you lunch if you can figure out the logistics for every MS4 to do 3-4 audition rotations at hospitals that can barely keep rotations open for their home medical schools..
We need to hospitalize more patients for longer periods of time.
