I don't mind the essays about lame subjects that so many secondary applications require. I don't mind umpteen recommendation requirements that some schoosl require (e.g. "recommendation must be written on a 8.5x11 letterhead and folded into an oragami swan in order for us to accept it")

What I am absolutely sick and tired of doing is filling out coursework information for these schools that is readily acquired from my AMCAS application. It is patently obnoxious for schools to require us to do this.

Just my two cents.

It

The coursework part is without a doubt the most annoying part of the entire application process, both on AMCAS and then again on secondaries.

What are some of the schools with those types of secondaries?

the ny schools require you to fill it out b/c they want to make sure you've completed your requirements... it's not that difficult, is it? i'd say it's harder for me to fill it out b/c i'm on the quarter system, so i can never quite figure out how to convert the credits, and each school is different. anyway. sometimes it actually does serve a purpose 😀

Annoying? Maybe, depending on how semantically strict you're being.

But given the choice between UConn's six essays and UVM's "Required Coursework" or BU's "Prerequisite Grid", guess which secondary I was least excited to fill out?

Sure, they could get all that info themselves from the AMCAS application. But if they want to justify their application fees by having me jump through a few hoops instead of making me actually do the work of writing more essays, I'm all for it!

Essays actually add new ways for you to be competitive. You can explain yourself, give them a better feel for who you are, and be constructive.

Copying down the same 15 courses you already copied 10 times in other secondaries is hardly useful to anyone except the school, saving them like 2 minutes of looking over your transcript to make sure you took the courses. Oh yeah, and you're paying them to not do that work.
