Ok so I was out with some girls last night, and one of them by chance has a sister that just up and quit medical school. I know she was telling the truth because I have met this particular girl before; I just did not ask her anything specific about why she quit because I figured it was personal. So after I discovered that one of the girls i was with was the sister to the med school drop out, I asked her why she quit. She said:

"First off, my sister graduated with a 3.89 gpa and had a 27 on the MCAT. She said all the student were perscribed aderol (unsure about the spelling) so they could stay awake and focus, and sleeping pills so they could actually sleep when they needed it. She said it was the only way to get all the work done and she cound not handle it anymore". She also said the the students had to see a therapist once a week....no exception.

I knew medical school was rough but good God, I didn't think you would have to take pills just to get your work done!!

She also went on to say that since I'm a white male I would need around a 3.8-4.0 to get in, because white males are over represented. I have a 3.47 so I'm a little concerned. BTW the school I'm talking about is LSU School of Medicine Sheveport. I really don't know if what here sister was saying was true because I figured she might have been making excuses for not finishing, and although there could have been some grain of truth to what she was saying, I think it might have been mildly exagerated. I told her that the average GPA for this school was a 3.6 but she said that since I'm a white male I would have to surpass that mark. I hope she's wrong, and that's why I'm asking you guys. I'm going to post this in the Allopathic med student forum as well, because I think it would be helpful for me to get the POV of some actual current med students as well.

Thanks to all that respond!

Sounds like total BS about Aderall. You don't need 3.8 to get in even as a white male.

RELAX!! Some schools have bad reps. Most are not like that. Most say it is not so bad. Also, males get in with all sorts of gpa's Trust me. I can give more anecdotes, but you will be fine. It is just to justify why they quit. Trust me

You don't need to take meds to get thru med school. But you will usually have to up the effort and work a lot harder and longer than in undergrad. Nuff said.

Maybe I misunderstood but I think OP is saying that the school forces students on Aderall.

uuuuuuuhhhhhh..... no. she just wanted to try and justify "dropping out." she seems like a drama queen that always wants to make it seem like she lives the most difficult life in the world. i've noticed there are a bunch of those in the pre-med world.

I don't know about adderall and sleeping pills, but I think you could definitely use some of these. 😉 But seriously tho, that story sounds kinda ridiculous...I don't think you should worry.

Some people cannot handle it--that, I do believe. There probably are students on Adderall, but to say all of them are overworked to the point where they need uppers to stay focused and downers to relax is a pretty strong statement. People handle stress differently. Don't let it scare you away. 😳 you are hearing this being far removed from the situation so take it with a grain of salt. 😉

It all depends on both the person and the school. There is no possible way to generalize the med school experience because everyone handles stress differently. Just to provide a counter example, I know someone currently in med school who rountinely goes to Vegas and/or the beach almost every weekend. The only way to really know what it is like is to experience yourself.

meh, i think it's a load of bs. you can totally get in, your gpa looks good. just keep it up. there's a reason y'all can stay "overrepresented" 😉 but, i was wondering, can you PM me which school this was?

wow free drugs and free therapy! 😱 that's a sweet deal if you ask me.

in all seriousness though, i'm sure this chick is blowing things out of proportion. even if she isn't, all schools have different styles and different kinds of students. you'll see once you visit and interview at schools, not all are hard core stress factories. but you will have to work hard.

^^ has to be in the running for worst movie title ever. For all the good stuff Samuel L Jackson has done, he's also done some real ****. (think: making an empowering speech when an intelligent shark flies out and eats him. Seriously wtf is he thinking when he signs onto this crap?!)

LSU school of medicine Shreveport.

I wasn't trying to get anything started with the whole race issue so i hope you or no one else took that the wrong way. It's just a matter of statistics and I was just repeating what that girl said.

Thanks for all responces. You guys are the greatest!

The shark had to eat him. No one could come up with a decent way for him to finish the speech.

Men are not "over-represented". Its actually quite the opposite. Someone posted the UC article on the URM report. Basically showing that white males are not accepted with the population applied. However, I would agree with the posters. Take this with a grain of salt. crazy lady.

I guess this person must go to school in California because there's no way they could do that otherwise.

i have two friends who were both pre-med at some point and were encouraged to try this career path since they had high grades. one of these girls i now work with and she has super duper OCD about every detail in life...down to ironing her camisoles and using post-its and highlighters like it is going out of style. i imagined her as a student in med school and had to mentally smirk. she would NOT make it. i personally think those people who are so obsessive about knowing every detail, every lecture, note card and highlights the hell out of everything are doomed to a freakish misery of late nights, panic disorders, and other such behaviors that drop-out is inevitable. just my opinion...not every smart person is cut out for the amount of information that will fly at our heads and be able to let go of what they will not remember. :scared:

First of all, it's ok to freak out... but don't overdo it. Just remember that everyone is different and has different POV. I think if you make it to med school, that means you have the "right" qualities that'll make you succeed. Besides, despite the potential for competition and even instances of ranking in some schools, everyone who makes it through med school has an MD at the end. Now I can't speak from experience because I'm about to start in August, but I have heard crazy stories like this too. On one of my interviews, a 4th yr student told me how he used to drink 10+ cups of coffee a day to stay up until 2 am to study. Then, he would get up at 6 am and study/go to class. THAT was his routine. On weekends, he used to get 5 hrs/night and the rest of his time, he would study study study. I am sure that there are times that you'll have to lead that lifestyle, but it's not every single week of med school. Just remember that if you make it to med school, you're there because many qualified people agree that you are fit to succeed!

About being a white male applicant, I do have to agree that med school admission is very racist. You see, I feel like I wasn't accepted to some schools because of my ethnic background (there are so many Iranians who are pre-med and they are DEFINITELY NOT underrepresented in medicine despite the fact that they're technically a "minority") However, I don't think you should worry about that too much. You may not get into your # 1 choice with your GPA and possibly your "common" race, but you will get into A school that actually prefers to take white males 🙂 So, just relax and apply early!

Good Luck!

Hey. I graduated from LSU-Shreveport last year. We had plenty of white males in the class. I am a white male myself and my GPA was 2.8 or thereabouts (I had some trouble in the early 1980s).

We also have (or had) a majority of Republicans, most of the class were either conservatives or leaned that way (but in no way did we have any political friction except with one or two goofy liberal professors) and I myself along with a couple of other guys sponsored a few Assault Rifle shoots at a local rifle range.

Don't sweat it. Medical school is hard but it's not that hard. We only lost six people out of a class of 100 over four years and four of them were just rolled back a year and just graduated this year.

She's full of crock. You need 4.0 and 40 to get into med school if you're a white male.

Alright, LSUHSC-Shreveport! That's my first choice, too! Awesome!

Now, to answer your question... none of what that girl told you sounds right. I've known a lot of students, interns, and residents at LSU. (And I dated one, so I think I would've known if he were being forced to take uppers and downers.)

The only thing remotely (VERY remotely) true, is talking to a counselor. But it's not mandatory, by any means. They just make counselors and therapists available in case the students need to talk. It is quite an adjustment, and quite a lot of work, so it can be very stressful, and talking to someone couldn't hurt. (But no Nazi-marches to weekly therapy.)

And I think you're GPA is fine. I know their avg MCAT went up this year. (That's my hold-up... that, and my score is now expired.)

And as far as the popping pills, I don't know ANYTHING about that. I'm sure there are some students on some meds... but nothing "generally passed out" to every student, along with the textbooks. They don't put you on uppers and downers to make it.

If you have any other questions about LSU, feel free to send me a message. I've spent a lot of time there, so I'm VERY familiar, and would be happy to provide any advice I can!
