So, I'm a psychology major and I had to take Social Psychology this semester. I took the final and got an 87...and I needed an 88 to ensure an A. I have a 92.8% in that class and a 93% is an A. Now, most professors I know would round up...but my professor emailed me and told me it would be playing favorites if she rounded up. I'm very mad...

Well instead of rounding up why don't you ask if you can do extra assignments that are worth 0.2%?

lol our school plays favorite all the time, i am always shafted cause i can't control myself sometimes when i get mad and when i find the situation to be unfair. I don't mind it, as long as i am learning hehe. so yes profs makes me mad, but grades never really matter to me

In the email, I asked if there was anything at all I could do and she said that would be playing favorites, as well.

It makes me upset because that .2% is the only thing keeping me from a 4.0.

WHAT? I am sorry but I can NOT feel bad for you. If it was explicitly on the syllabus what constituted an A you should have planned better. I understand the situation sucks and it would have taken only a little bit of leeway to get that grade up but the fact is, you didn't get a 93, you don't deserve anything. I really dislike students that know what they need to get the grade they want from the beginning and then expect some help when they failed to achieve it.

Also: an A- is nothing to sneer at. If anything it should make you more motivated to try and plan harder for next time

haha just a grade, not goign to affect you in the future, the point is you know the material and that is all that matters. so don't worry, i mean like once my prof graded my exam incorrected, but refused to change my grade haha o well, its all good.

bone her...jp

If you can then rummage through old tests and what not looking for a few extra points.

On the other hand, an A- will not kill you

It was not explicitly on the syllabus that a 92.8% would be an A-. In every other class I've had at this university, most professors will consider 92.6% and higher a regular A. There was very little planning I could have done differently, as our grades were based almost solely on tests and I studied harder for them than I ever have for a test. I wanted an 88% on the test so that I could ensure an A, but I was under the impression that an 87% would suffice as well. When I e-mailed my professor to make sure(after the exam), she said it it would not. I know an A- is nothing to sneer at...and I was very motivated and worked very hard. I was just unaware that this professor would grade differently than every other professor I've had here.

All the tests are on computers, so we don't get any copies of our test results ever.

Hrmmm so if your mom went 2 miles over the speed limit and a cop gave her a ticket for 400 dollars, you wouldn't sympathize and only tell her that "yeah that sucks but it was explicitly stated that the speed limit was 40 mph - you were over 40, so you deserve the full punishment."

And I hope you don't turn into a doc that refuses to help a dying patient who shows up at your door - "yeah that sucks but it was explicitly stated on your contract that you signed that you can only go to a provider under your own HMO, I'm not in your group, so you don't deserve anything."

Oh, I thought you were on the ABCDF scale, but if you'll get an A-, that's life. Take out your anger on your pillow or girlfriend or something, but the sooner you let it go, the nicer doctor you'll become.

I would have only fought it if it meant 92.8% was a B.

Dude, an A- isn't really the same thing as a ticket for $400.

If this was a class where someone would get put on academic probation or something if they got under a B+ and they were 0.2% off then it'd be a bigger deal.

When you're talking about a 4.0 going to a 3.97 it's really hard to sympathize.

An A- doesn't ruin anybody's life. And if anything, it's probably good the OP find out what it feels like to not be uber perfect at something.

I have teachers at my school that will not compromise on A grades, ever. You get the required number of points in the syllabus from day 1 or you get a B, regardless of how the class average came down, if it's unnaturally low, etc.. no curving, no bumping, no nothing for an A. So I wouldn't be all that surprised. Not a big deal, though.. I wouldn't get worked up over it.

I normally wouldn't be too concerned, but that .2% is the only thing keeping me from a 4.0 this semester. Also, I have a boyfriend (I am a girl)...no girlfriends lol.

I know what's it like not to be perfect...my freshman year GPA was a 3.45. I was just .2% away from a 4.0 this semester, which is why it sucks.

Perhaps. But I was arguing the concept of not budging for a 0.2% - not that this is right or wrong per se, but deserving of some understanding of the initial complaint made by OP.

Maybe you're right and if OP was a 2.9 student you might feel sorry for him more, but seems like in that case we are doling out sympathies based on relative success rather than the predicament itself.

you didnt make the grade for the A. end of story. (borderline cases happen for every class all the time... you are not special... whining wont help)

I hope you are kidding. Even if you keep your 4.0 it doesnt mean anything.... medschools wont judge you differently with a 3.97. your problem is your personality. with this attitude, you're going to burn out in medschool.

It's not a matter of keeping a 4.0...I just knew I was doing well enough in classes that it was a possibility this semester. As I said in a previous post, I had a 3.45 my freshman year. I just thought it would be nice to have a 4.0 once. It's not like I expect it every semester...it just would've been nice.
