Don't really know what to think. I am strongly considering a gap year, but will most likely work as a software engineer (not at an incredible company either) and get some clinical experience part-time (I want a scribe job, but they are competitive, so I am considering being a CNA alongside volunteer work). What is the likelihood I get in with this background (I think the GPA is misleading since I have been told my academic record is inconsistent).

Region/State: Georgia
Race: Asian Male
Major: Computer Science
cGPA: 3.96
sGPA: 4.0
MCAT: 511
**Note: I have been told my academic record is inconsistent since I have 1 W and my course load was as follows:
12 credits, 17 credits, (summer) 7 credits, (1 W) 13 credits, 18 credits, (summer) 9 credits + job, 15 credits, (spring) 6 credits, (summer) 7 credits, 18 credits, 9 credits

Non-clinical experience:
500 hours tutoring underserved (foreign born, lower socioeconomic status) high school students
200 hours intro to biology TA
500 hours paid research (REU) on computational biology project
300 hours unpaid research also involving computational biology (I will do my thesis on this project)

Clinical experience:
100 hours volunteering at local hospital

Notable experience:
100 hours computer science project for my undergrad's med school (application physicians use in interactions with patients)
50 hours other computer science project that is healthcare related

Shadowing:
50 hours shadowing

*No outstanding awards outside of dean's list, summa cum laude (is this a red flag)

The likelihood of you getting in is about as good as anyone else's. You're a solid to really good applicant at any non T20 school. Bump up your clinical volunteering by a bit. Apply next cycle.

Get off campus and out of your comfort zone.
Ditto gonnif's sage advice on adding more patient contact experience and service to others less fortunate than yourself.

I’m thinking about working as a software engineer full-time and CNA part-time during my gap year. Will this help or hurt me?

The CNA will probably help. The software engineer won’t. What about nonclinical volunteering to those less fortunate than yourself-to the unserved/underserved in your community?

I was thinking about volunteering at a soup kitchen and/or habitat for humanity on the weekends as well. Honestly the software engineering role would be mostly for the pay, but I felt that if I did it for a year I could leverage it in the argument that I should be in medicine because I can better understand and act on the trends of technology in medicine

I understand the need for a well paying job. The soup kitchen volunteering will be good. Just make sure you accumulate 150+ hours before you apply. And I don’t even know how to respond to your last statement. I suppose it might work but it could be a big issue if you try to pass it off as something you don’t really believe. ADCOMS are pretty wise and can see through smoke and bs.

You should be able to both work and get in the extracurriculars to buff up your application. We especially like it when people can walk and chew gum at the same time.
It's okay to work. I'm a firm believer that having a an employment history is a good thing
