Hi guys,

Do anesthesiologists have to "scrub in" before a surgery like a surgeon does?

Also, when washing your hands while scrubbing in, do you have to take off your wedding ring?

No real motive behind my questions...I'm just curious.

No, you scrub before donning sterile gloves and gown.

Yes. Most people tie them to their scrubs. Personally, I just don't have one.

Usually not.

No rings, bracelets or watches while scrubbing or under gloves while scrubbed in. You remove them and put them somewhere safe. Some people slip the ring through the watch band and tie both to the scrub pants; I always just snapped the ring onto the watch band and tossed it into the breast pocket of my scrubs.

That's only if you scrub in (surgery). If you don't scrub in (anesthesia) and glove non-sterilely (for example, to intubate), I've never seen anyone remove a ring.

In OB, the deliveries are supposed to be done sterilely as well. I've seen midwives and OB residents glove over their rings, though. Some even attempt it over the phat 3-karat monsters.

This urologist I work with gloves "sterily" over his watch and wedding band all the time. He also drums on the back table and emotionally sings to "On Broadway" during surgery.
