I went to a dental school where the first 1.5 years are all medical school, and no clinic work. So when dentistry pre-clinic started they piled on all the lab work like hell to catch up with all the other dental schools! My right thumb joints (I am right handed) ache like crazy from all the class 2 hatchet work, ortho wire bending, amalgam packing, slow speed handpiece pressing. It doesn't even recover from a weekend of rest!

Anybody else had the same problem? Am I holding my instruments right or something? Or is this just a rude awakening to dentistry? I'm too old for this.

Sounds neuromuscular better get it checked out. As a precaution, make sure you p/u some disability insurance while you can (in school) because when you get out they won't insure your thumb.
