South University Intern Hours

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm planning on applying to South University (to start June 2010). I've searched some old threads on SDN, but I'm not clear about when South students complete their intern hours. It's a 3-year program, and Georgia requires 1500 hours. Are current South students able to get all of these during rotations? If not, what do you do?

Thanks!

I don't go to South, but the current GA board requirements are: you get 1000hours credit as a result of your P4 APPE rotations, and the other 500 hours must be worked by you in an intern situation. Those hours must be worked when school is not in session - i.e. Christmas break, summer, spring break, etc. and you must work at least 20 hours in each week (or an average of 20 over several weeks) for the hours to be reportable to the board. Also, the clock doesn't start until after you actually start pharmacy school classes in the first semester in the fall.

So, I am unclear how South students meet this requirement without having a delay at the end, unless they max out hours over Christmas every year.

I'm a South student so I can answer this. If you're going to be licensed in GA you'll get 1000 hours from doing your school rotations and the other 500 you have to get on your own time when your classes are not in session as stated previously. We get 1-2 weeks off between quarters and about 3 weeks at christmas. We also have 6 weeks off during quarter 5 when we do out intermediate rotations and a lot of people do the bulk of their hours during this time. It's kind of a pain to do your hours on your vacation all the time but hey not all states require this so you could always get licensede elsewhere. Also, South students cant take all the licensing exams until August so you can complete your hours after you graduate and before you take the boards if you need to. Hope this helps!
