Okay, I'll be more helpful than my last reply.
I am from Texas <img border="0" alt="[Lovey]" title="" src="graemlins/lovey.gif" />
and I do understand what your saying. Not a lot of southern rep.s. Too bad too, it's not that I don't enjoy everyone else's comments, but I rarely see my region mentioned; schools like NOVA, UConn, UCSF, etc. have their own threads. Watch, I'll start one for my school and no one will give a positive reply......

I'm from the south - Atlanta, GA - and will be applying to Medical College of GA and Medical University of South Carolina this summer. I never hear anything about them on this board although dentist I have shadowed say they are both decent schools. I don't think I really want to go up north and see snow.
Although I was born and bred up north, I'm a converted southerner I guess. I spent 4 years at UNC for my undergrad, and I will be sticking around another 4 years to attend Dental School here at UNC. I think I saw 1 other person who is going to UNCs Dental School on this board.

Exactly, Deciduous. It's kinda hard to get all excited about news from NY, CT, and CA when they're all so far away from us. I guess we southerners are too busy planting cotton to get on the computer? 🙄

hey...im in TN, so at least Ive been representin' as they say. Ive been at school in NC for the last three years. Ill be going up north for school anyway at UConn, so I wont be around for long...though the plan is prob. to come back down here to practice.
I think it would be worth it for you fellow southerners to look at northern schools as well as southern; it might do you a bit of good to have a change of locale-or not, depending on your opinion. I did, and found that I liked a lot of the northern schools a great deal. I did enjoy UNC though, I have to say. Alabama is a great school, but I didnt have a chance there b/c I am a third year student.

I live in Atlanta, Georgia also. UAB is a great school and probably one of the toughest southern schools to get into. I also hear that the oral surgery program there is good.
I'll be applying to Medical College of Georgia, Nova, U Louisville, Indiana U, Boston U, Tufts, Temple, U Maryland, and maybe Pitt and Arizona.
There...looks like I have North, South, East, and West covered. 😀

Glad to hear that my new school (AL) is held in high regard. I wasn't aware how Alabama compared to other schools as far as selectivity goes. Good luck to all you southerners (even those heading up North).

I'm sure there are some hidden secrets (awesome dental schools) in the south. Wonder why they're not mentioned much?

Hey GTchick,
I know a professor at MCG, and according to him, it's really easy to get in if you're a GA resident, since they only take in-staters. Apparently they don't get very many applicants. (Unfortunatly this didn't help me since i'm an OH res.) Good luck with your applications!

Thank you Kung Foo for making me feel better about getting into school. I am going to take the DAT next week and I am so extremely nervous. I am at the point where I just want to get in somewhere even if Augusta isn't my first choice of places to reside. I only wish that Emory still had a dental school so I could stay in Atlanta.
UAB is a great dental school according to the dentist I have shadowed and I am looking into applying there. It all depends on what happens with my DAT.

From what I understand, the current editor of JADA is a professor at UAB.
I'm with you GTChick. I'm in no hurry to move to Augusta. That's why Nova is also one of my top choices.

If you go to the MCG page, they have stats posted about just about everything the school has done. The stats show that the school does pretty well each year on National Boards part II, which is the clinical part, but not so hot on Part I, the academic part. This means that the school trends toward preparing its students in the clinical setting; schools like Nova, Univ. of Tenn., and UOP also stress this idea. MCG doesnt claim to be an academic powerhouse, but apparently produces clinicians that know their stuff well enough.
The school name won't give you any advantage in specializing, but, as anyone will tell you...it's MUCH more about how well you do in school and what you make of your time then what school you went to. Plus, as you know, the "good ol' boy (or chick, in your case)" factor is a big one in the south...people in GA like to hear that you went to school in GA (not that many will ask).
Also, you will still retain relationships with your classmates that will give you "connections" as you establish your practice. My roommate is applying there for this next year and is pretty confident he can get in due to the 2.5/1 applicants/accepted ratio.

GTChick:
JonR pretty much summed it up. I've already earned a bachelor's degree. I've been out of school since '97 and am now taking some additional upper division biology (less than part time) at Georgia State.
