I was wondering how much free time people have in dental school. From what I understand I will be in class/clinic from 8 to 5 and then studying till around 8-9. Is this accurate or am i off base?

It can be accurate, but it doesn't have to be. I'm not sitting at the top of my class or anything, but I don't spend much time studying outside of class. Generally I'll spend a couple hours a night the week of exams, and that's about it. Again, it didn't get me straight A's, but it was enough that my less impressive lab work only brought me down to a B average.

First year:

8 - 5 school
5 - 7 dinner/breathe
7 - 2 study

Second year:

8 - 5 school
5 - 7 dinner/breathe
7 - 2 study & labwork

Third year:

8 - 4 school
4 - 7 labwork & harass/beg patients for appointments
7 - 12 study

Fourth year:
9 - 4 clinic
4 - 7 labwork
7pm - 9am - sit like a lump glued to SDN/TV & sleep

If there was any spare time in dental school, it surfaces from time to time in the fourth year. Not really very prominent at all in the first three years.

I have spare time every night unless there is a test the next day. In my first and now second year I have yet to have a day like Griffins, but than again I don't want to specialize. my days are like this

8-4:30 school
5:00- 7:00pm eat work out, play with daughter.
7-11:00 watch T.V. play Ps2 or dink around on the internet. ( if test next day study during this time)
Weekends unless there is a test on monday I leave my bag at school.

My motto is, "there is always time." You just have to manage it and prioritize. I have a wife and 7 month old kid, plan to specialize, get good grades, live an hour away from school, juggle three research projects and still find time to do things I want. It's all about making time.

It depends if you want to be at the top of your class. I don't, so I only study the night before tests now in my second year. That will all change before boards. First year, I studied constantly. ALL THE TIME. Every night for a couple of hours an all weekends when it was test week

My motto is "work hard......play harder."

1st year:
-Study about 3 hours a nite everynight except fridays and saturdays
-Friday/Saturday: party like it's 1999!

2nd year:
-studied about 3-4 hours everynight except fridays.....work double time on sat and sun
-Friday: party like it's 1999

3rd year:
-study 5 hours a week if there were any tests coming up.
-party just about everyday! :horns:

My take:

My first semester: class from 8-5 (study intermittantly during class and *rarely* crack a book or a computer after 6pm).

This semester: class from 8-3 and study from 4-midnight. I literally have NO spare time right now. I fall out of bed in the morning and do it all over again.

Right now I'm averaging 35-40 hours of studying a week, and that doesn't include anything done during lecture/lab hours.

I wasn't content at all with my class ranking after first semester, so I've made a goal to actually devote some time to my studies. We'll see what the cat brings in.
