Hey,

Whenever I look at some of these pediatric residency webistes, they mention the 'Special Alternative Pathway' ...

From what I gather, it seems that if you are accepted to this, instead of a third year of residency, you begin your fellowship. In essence, residency becomes two years.

Does anyone know how many people use this pathway, its competitiveness, its advantages/disadvantages? Do only certain schools offer this option? Does anyone have experience with this program? Would a residency program not be thrilled with someone who is interested in this (because they lose a work year out of you)?

There was also a brief discussion of this topic in the private neonatology forum. The gist was that although the pathway exists, it is rare for programs to allow residents to do it, unlike in IM where it is fairly common and well-established.

I read the thread, but I still have questions... Does anyone know if certain programs are more willing to partake than others? Does anyone know of a fellow in Neonatology out there that has actually done the SAP? If you were to do this SAP, does that mean your first set of internal exams are during your first year, so should I start studying? 😱 And does this mean that you would apply to neo fellowships as soon as the fall of your 1st year in residency? 😀
