Anyone here doing this or know somebody doing it? From what I've read the deal is that you do 2 yrs of general Peds, then the last 3 in the fellowship of your choice.

I'm about halfway thru my M3 year. I'm pretty sure I want to do peds cards and I've had a couple of the fellows at my institution tell me to look into this as a potential option. It would be nice to be done in 5 yrs instead of 6 and avoid going thru the match twice. The downside seems to be that you're working even harder than the average intern to get the core requirements done and pass the relevant exams in 2 yrs instead of 3.

Anyone have any experience with this?

(Sorry, the URL bar doesn't update so I couldn't copy/paste it): Go to www.abp.org, then the "resident and fellow training" tab on the top. Then go to the "general pediatric special training pathways" tab on the left-there is a sub-menu heading for the S.A.P. and the link on the following page lays out the policy on the S.A.P. I don't have experience and don't know anyone who does, but this is a start. You'd have to be a stellar intern and second year and you'll probably have to perform quite a bit above average for the PL-2 In Training Exam.

Although I don't have any experience with this lots of resident's do it at my program. In fact, we have the most doing alternative pathways. Most of the people do it 1) Have a strong identified interest in a given sub-specialty from day 1, 2) Have a strong research background or PhD, 3) Have very specific career plans that would benefit from a year less of pediatric residency. I think otherwise the expectation is that every sub-specialist be a great pediatrician first.

Yeah I read through the ABP's description of it a while back, just wondering if anyone had any personal experiences with it.
