hey, international dentist here 🙂 was wondering.. how many dentists after detting their DDS/ DMD actually take up a speciality, i.e. go in for another 3year long degree program? i've heard in the states, once you get your dental degree, most dentists just do a lotta lil courses.. is that true?

and for those who do specialize, what's the most favourite and most difficult branch to get into? 'i'm really interested in prosthodontics.. how tough would that be on a scale of 1 to 10?

thanks alot!

I'd say about 15-20% of the people decide to specialize each year. They can range from anywhere between 2-6 years, depending on the specialty. Once you graduate from dental school, you have to fulfill a certain amount of continuing education hours each year for your license. Best advice is to keep your options open and don't decide that you are going to specialize until you get through the majority of your dental school education. It's hard to gauge how difficult one specialty is over another because it all depends on what your desire and strengths are.

Best of luck,
