Attached is a website that lists number of applicants/place for speciality training in the UK.

Some surprising findings (esp. if you are used to judging fields in terms of how competitive they are in the US)

CT surgery (33) is way more over-applied for than Neurosurg (13).

General Practice (8.1) > Dermatology (7.7)

Public Health Medicine (7) > Urology (6.4)

Nephrology (5.6) > Emergency (4.8)

The list goes on.....

Doesn't say anything about the quality of the applicants to these fields of course, maybe just how desirable fields are?

Interesting how the specialities known in US for lifestyle/high compensation (like derm and urology) take a big hit while other competitive surgical fields like neuro, ortho and CT seem as popular as ever.

May because consultants work largely the same hours (>40, <60) here for similar pay (85% of UK consultants earn between 70-140K pounds/yr, ie: 120-240K dollars/yr) regardless of speciality.

Anyway - have a look for yourselves....
