I have an interest in cardiothoracic surgery and neurosurgery which are fairly long residencies. Will the Army put me through these residencies or are they looking for more general medical personnel? (I understand I would have a longer payback but that doesn't really bother me at this point - I just don't want to be restricted in my choice).

CT Surgery is a general surgery fellowship. You would have to complete GS training first and then apply for fellowship. The numbers are impossible to predict. Neurosurgery has a single slot military-wide for inservice training and again outservice slots are impossible to predict. Hope this helps.
