I understand that there is little to no difference between a MD and a DO, with practice of OMT (Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment) being the thing that stands out the most. I was curious I've heard that DO's can apply for same residencies as an MD, what is the process for that? I mean do you have to take USMLE along with COMLEX?

Also I am interested in the following specialties DO Psychiatry/ Oncology/Emergency Medicine (p.s. I know it's a wide range of specialties but....) . Now I've heard about DO's getting specialties in Emergency Medicine, but don't know if a specialty in Psychiatry or Oncology is possible.

Do you know any DO who is part of any of the either two residencies? (i.e. Psychiatry or Oncology)

1. Type on google "can osteopathic students apply to MD residencies?" and the top 5 links will give you an answer + more extra details.

2. http://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/question-as-a-do-how-does-one-enter-an-md-residency.1033781 Please click this link to get your answer about specialties.

3. Type on google "osteopathic psychiatrists" or "osteopathic oncologists" you will get your answer and maybe a few specific DO names.

Please be proactive and really do independent research. Use other people as a last resource if you attempted to find the answer on your own and couldnt. Its a life-long skill you need to master as a pre-medical and potential medical student.

2600 DOs applied for an Acgme (MD) residency last year and 159 of them matched psych.

Oncology is a fellowship of internal medicine, which means you must do an internal medicine residency first. Roughly 300 DOs match Acgme internal medicine each year. In 2011, 41 DOs applied for a hem/onc fellowship and 26 matched. In 2013, 29 DOs matched hem/onc and 1 matched oncology. There is no data on how many DOs applied in 2013.

There are 7 AOA (DO)hem/onc fellowship programs. Each program usually takes one fellow per year.

If you take the usmle and match at a decent university internal medicine program becoming a hem/onc physician is reasonable as a DO.

That would be program specific. I can speak for our program, we are fine with Complex only if they are going through NRMP match. We do have some who take both exams.

I'm gonna go through ERAS so I guess I'll take both.

I personally think it's a colossal mistake not to take the USMLE if you are a DO student. Open as many doors as you can. There are obviously many, many ACGME programs that will not take COMLEX scores. Even if your heart is set on a competitive AOA residency only, plan on USMLE from day 1.

Take this advice. I learned this the HARD way. Wanted to get into surgery, rotated at a program who wanted me to apply. I did not take the USMLE and my application was automatically rejected for not having that test. If you plan to not do a DO residency, take both exams and give yourself a fighting chance.
