Hey all

I'm just wondering if any of you out there female 'pre-dentists' are planning on doing specialization. Of course we should worry about this when we actually even get into dentistry right?

but the reason I'm asking this is I know that it is much easier to get into specialization if you go to a states school rather than UBC (Canadian school).
I'm attending UBC right now as an undergrad and because it is cheaper, and because my family lives here it would be better for me to go here financially. However, if I want to do specialization it would be better to go to states school.
(UBC apparently sucks at sending students to specialization)

Why I ask as a female? Because we have a thing called 'pregnancy'. If I actually do specialization (which I really would like to do) I will be graduating earliest at an age of 28.
As we all know it is best for the child for us to get pregnant between age of early 20's to maybe early 30's. This means if I want a child of my own I will have a chance to work maximum of 2~3years before I get pregnant.

I ask this because if I end up not doing specialization I will just want to go to UBC which has different requirements than state school. They barely look at EC and only DAT and GPA. I'm in 4th year now (didn't apply to states schools yet) and I would very much like to get some opinions on what other female or male dent/predent students and dentists think!

Is it possible to take care of the baby and go to dental school? Or are they graduating very soon? I'm thinking you have to be around 24/7 with a new born baby...

A girls in my class did it during first year. You have to have good family support though. And it is better to have a baby in 3rd and 4th years. Either way, I think a women having a baby during dental school would be incredibly stressful.

I don't think that pregnancy should specifically cause you to not specialize. I think having a baby during dental school would be really stressful, but I've heard of a lot of women in specialization programs being pregnant. You'll probably just need a lot of support from your family at that time.
