  1. Dental Student
Finished D1 year with mid grades. Any advice on what to do if I want to match into peds or endo. Advice in terms of research, taking the ADAT, and other clubs?

I would start trying to do research now and get involved in clubs. Most schools don't require the ADAT, they usually want the GRE, but there are schools that don't require either. You obviously want to get high scores on that.

Endo and peds are very different specialties so you should spend some time shadowing them both to know what you really want to do.

Start getting close with good faculty at your schools since you will want them to write you good letters.

Endo is interesting because they usually want you to practice as a general dentist before applying, it is very hard to get into a good endo program straight out of dental school. They usually want you to at least do a GPR or AEGD.

Peds
-Externships
-Attend AAPD
-Volunteer w. various peds focused groups (doesn't have to be dental)-show them you are comfortable around children and interacting with them
-Mission trips
-Certain programs do like candidates that have practiced for a little and then going back as well (increased speed, local anesthesia confidence).
-Bubbly, pleasant personality that would resonate well w/ kids
-Get to know pedo dept (residents, faculty, research)

Endo
-Externships
-Attend AAE and network (I.e program directors)
-Get to know endo dept (residents, faculty, research) Be a helpful, interested presence.
-Pickle Dental is right about them wanting some GP exp (GPR, AEGD, PP). I have seen dental students get in straight out of school

**Also shadow private practices in endo and pedo so you get a feel for what real world practice looks like
**Do you prefer one-two patients at a time (endo) or juggling multiple and moving around a lot (pedo)?
**More methodical and technical (endo) or big picture, empathetic, kid friendly and positive exp focused (pedo)?
