Hello everyone, just needed some advice/opinions from people. I am currently in the process of applying to an advanced standing program in USA with the long term goal of applying for a specialization (in maxillofacial surgery). The first question is, do the universities mind that would the advanced standing programs mind if I mentioned this in my SOP/interview. Second question is would the university I attend for the advanced standing program significantly affect my chances of getting into a residency?? (I really want to go to BU for advanced standing)

I would really appreciate it if people can input ideas, especially those who are already got themselves into this american system

Thanks a lot 👍

No, universities won't mind. they would like to know your future plans.
getting into maxfac involves building up on your research work, externships etc. its a tough task. so choose a school that gives you a chance to do these things.
BU should be fine though.

First....No need to hide your intentions in the interview....i was honest with my plans for residency and i got acceptance in DDS......so it dint hurt me.

Second.....The college wont matter much if u r committed to your goal. Most of the faculty will be helpful towards your preparation for residency and will give you the right guidance.

Third.....O.S is a bit tricky for internationally trained students who do DDS/DMD here, as some programs have requirements of Green card or citizenship.

Hope this helps. 👍

hey there, does oral surgery residency allow international dentist with 2 years dds to get into it or it must be a 4 year dds ? thx

they let you apply.
many need PR/ Citizenship.

being selected is another issue. 6 yr courses need the med school to admit you as well, and med school need your college transcripts - which most FTDs don't have.

I hear that having an AEGD/ GPR helps your application.

the college that follows after high school.
most FTD's get into dental school right after high school (12th Std in India), while students in the US go thru 3 years of college before they apply to dental schools.

Thanks for your feedback guys. Regarding the requirements of green card/citizenship - where do I stand with a Canadian citizenship??

I DID NOT IMPLY THAT AT ALL.

Nothing is REQUIRED. you can apply with ur US DDS.
This was in regards to the 6 year program only (As I had mentioned above), this is one reasoning given for FTDs finding it tought to get into OS. This is not a rule.
Also, the 4 year program is a diff thing.

WARNING:
for every word you read on SDN, you should have read 10 words on an official site / dental school page.
without knowing the basic background on the subject, you may not understand what we are talking about.

As an international student you still can apply to a handful of programs (both 4 and 6). You can find out the citizenship/gc reqs on the PASS website.
Doing externships during dental school, participating in research aiming at publications are a huge plus.
