Specializing in pediatrics?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
All of the dental residencies are competitive, but some more than others. Traditionally pediatrics had been competitive from an extracurricular standpoint, but recently it has become more academically competitive as well.

Agreed. Getting in is heavily reliant on how well you interview because peds requires a certain personality. That being said, you still have to get interviews and that is getting harder and harder each year. Certain programs tend to value different aspects of the application, so that comes into play as well. My program had ~130 applications and granted ~32 interviews for the 6 spots. I'm sure those numbers are around average, but there is certainly programs with more and less applications per spot available.

By personality, what do you mean?
Friendly and "round", since dealing with children? Or...?

It seems you guys are OMFS and Ped, respectively.

Can you shed some insight on your current curriculum/residency?

Thanks!

Personality: Friendly, personable, positive, VERY patient, and not a stiff. What particular insight would you like to know?

Specifically, if it's much harder to work on children versus adults?
I assume there are the extreme cases in either age groups, though.

I assume children are more difficult to "work-on" versus the adults, since their mouthes are much smaller... do you get a lot of bitten fingers?

The dentistry itself is very easy. Pediatric dentistry is all about managing the patient. That's why the personality comes into play.
