If one were to say, do a Comprehensive Dentistry residency and then, after the 5 year required wait period, apply for another residency like endo, or prosth, does having the Comprehensive Speciality already HURT his/her chances of getting accepted into another residency program?? I am sure that some people want further education or maybe decide down the line that they like another speciality and want to pursue it. Thoughts??

It shouldn't hurt much... Unless the one you're moving out of is critically undermanned.

In the past, exodontia was a stepping stone to OMFS. I also recently met an Army O-5 who is an OMFR and is now completing the Army 2-year.

Vellnueve, I am just a lowly 2nd year dental student so I am not sure what you are talking about in regards to exodontia and OMFR? What are these designations??

Each service may have different guidelines on this. In the army if you have done a comprehensive 2 yr AEGD, then after you have been a comp dentist for 5 yrs you may apply for a 2nd specialty. You may not do this with any other specialty (can't do Perio and then change to OMFS).

I do not believe your chances are hurt - if anything you stand out since you have already proved you are looking at the military long-term and have made it through 1 residency.

What is the role of OMFR in practice? If it is reading images is their role why dont md radiologists do the reads?

An exodontist is a dentist that takes teeth out and not much else.

OMFR = oral/maxillofacial radiologist.
