Specializing while doing GP

On the way to OMFS the other day, I noticed that one of the dentists next to him was a dual ortho/general practitioner. I thought specialties weren't licensed to practice GP, so any ideas on how he's doing this?

Back in the day, not sure how it is now but you could do multiple residencies. I know of a dentist who did peds and Ortho and does both now. Of course, any general dentist can advertise doing Ortho as long as they don't claim to be an orthodontist.

And to the poster above me, DDS and DMD are the same thing, that's not it.

If you have a DDS or DMD, you can practice all forms of general dentistry. Specialists all have those degrees.

"DDS/DMD" was phrased that way to show equivalence.

In fact, you can do ortho, endo, extract wisdom teeth as a generalist as well.

As a specialist, you can choose to still practice general dentistry as long as you don't advertise yourself as a GP. So another explanation could be that the guy did an ortho residency but felt like expanding. However this is unlikely...

What is more likely is if this dentist took CE courses on Invisalign and basic ortho and is choosing to do them. He can say, he offers orthodontic services, but he has to be very careful that he doesn't say anything that suggests he is a specialist in orthodontics (such as saying he has certification from an ortho organization or something.)
