so when you graduate from dental school, you go through a match-kind of process and a certain percentage get into specialties...

if you dont get in right away, can you do something to improve your chances if you are really interested in a specialty, like take a year and work with someone in the specialty or something, as a graduated dds?
 
I don't know the answer to your questions, but permit me to give my 2 pesos. I just dont understand the fascination that so many dental students have with specialization. I think that as dentists we have already chosen our specialty, ie conditions of the mouth and gums. Also, I think it would be highly boring to do the same thing all day, every day......... 😴 And its not like there is ever any letup, in the case of endodontists, each patient is difficult and mentally draining.

If increased earning is the motivation for your interests, you should realize that GP's do pretty darn well, earning in the top 8% of all American occupations. dont hold me to this, but new D-school grads can expect low six figures, and much more to come when you become the boss-man.
 
Thats a pretty phat car. I think it may make it to my top ten list of things to buy when I gaduate. This is the list so far, dont laugh, its all that gets me through some days:
10. New couch
9. New bedroom furniture, I found my current desk in the dumpster - no kidding!!!
8. subsciption to X-box live
7. Wedding ring for the love of my life - Gwen Stefani - she'll come around
6. New road bike - i lust after the trek madone, which Lance uses
5. Trip to Europe, I want to ride across the French countryside and pretend to be Lance Armstrong's better looking twin
4. New clothes- ie. not from the clearance rack at Walmart, my current wardrobe
3 gym membership, with personal trainer
2 A sailboat - nothing fancy, but nice
1 This is pretty simple - a PLASMA screen TV, at least 20
