My wife and I are IN LOVE with UNECOM 👍. The campus is spectacular, people are friendly, and everyone I have talked to, including a graduate, has raved about the quality of education. This is definitely my first choice school.

But looking at their latest match list brings me pause. I have a passing interest in primary care but more than likely I will find myself in a specialty (ala Anesthesia/CCM).

My question is: Why are so many UNECOM graduates choosing primary care? Is it the preference of the students? Is primary care emphasized in the curriculum? or is there another reason entirely?

Thanks!

Specialty choice is a personal decision. Most, if not all, DO schools emphasize primary care, but everyone is free to choose whatever they wish (and are qualified to match in).

I suppose that's what I was eluding to...

Do UNE's graduates not do well in the match? Or is their primary care preference just a result of the sample of students that matriculate at UNECOM?

Match info is on the UNECOM website, but 2006 may not be there yet. This info was posted unofficially in the 2010 class thread. As you can see, folks matched into several non-primary-care fields:

As far as I know, UNE graduates generally match into the field that they want. Many of my classmates were interested in primary care, but others were interested in different specialties (eg EM, Surgery, anesthesia, psych, OB/GYN, radiology). Each year each class will be different in what appeals to its members.

"CMB: T/ORTHO SURG PCOM PA" ... Are all the matches for the PCOM orthopedics listed like this? Why not just be listed under ORTHO and not CMB? I see the transitional year, but wouldn't that be assumed?

Perhaps what they are indicating is that the first and subsequent years are at the site. Otherwise folks may have the option of doing a transitional year elsewhere and matching for the subsequent training (e.g Anesthesiology --Transition year in Massachusetts with one program and years 2-4 in New York with another.).

Don't worry too much about the match list when you're looking into schools. Just because people in previous years matched into places you love/hate, doesn't mean that you're going to have a similar fate. The thing you need to keep your mind on is finding a place where you and your family will be happy and where you will be able to succeed in your medical education. If you do well at UNECOM, you'll do just fine in the match.
