I love polls. As of now, what specialty or specialties are you interested in pursuing? As of now I am interested in Derm, IM, Surgery, PM&R, and Emergency Med. It's all good. I'm sure after rotations in a few years I'll have a better idea.

Has anyone shadowed an anesthesiologist? I originally thought it might be a little boring, the same thing every day, and not much diagnosing involved.
Am I wrong? I also heard malpractice insurance is very high in this field.

I'm amazed that EM is leading the pack. What do most of you attribute this too? Nice lifestyle, shiftwork, $, excitement or all of the above? It is my first choice as well but I didnt' think it would get the majority. Any thoughts?

Variety, money, shift work (predictable hours), you get to see anything and everything (unpredictable cases)

I could see why people would choose Emergency Med. There's probably more reasons...

As of right now, I'm thinking of doing an EM/IM dual residency, then a fellowship in Critical Care. Do EM for the first half of my career then when I "burn out," I can hop into IM.

I'm mostly looking at doing child/adolescent psychiatry or neurology or child neurology.

But I'm also considering doing like IM/psych or peds/psych/child psych so that I can have some basically healthy patients along with the severe psychiatric cases. Or I could just have a regular practice but would then be more attuned to the mental health needs of my patients.

It sounds good to me, but I suppose I need to learn more to see what the combined specialty actually means.

May be Interventional radiology (IR) as having worked in interventional radiology for last two and half years, I find it very interesting. 20 years ago minimally invasive procedures were done by only IR doctors . But in last 5 to 10 years more and more of these procedures are done by doctors in other specialities like interventional cardiologist (which is the totally different field than IR), Vascular surgeons etc. So don't know if IR would still be around when I plan to do fellowship after 10 years or so...........

FP baby! I love it. I know its early but I cannot see myself doing something other than FP, internal, peds, or med-peds...I think you are almost always either a specialty type person or a primary type person and I am the latter! 🙂 So psyched about doing it one day. 🙂

All very true, but there are cons as well.

1) working strange shifts (12 AM to 12PM etc.)

2) Hight "burnout" (most EM res and interns on this site hate that word, but that is the way everyone describes it).

3) Seeing a lot of nasty stuff

4) Technically you are an employee, no privilages of owning your own practice.

I for one am willing to outweigh all of these cons for my passion, but I was surprised that so many people felt that way as well.

Well, let's see here...

I already know I want to get into one of the few combined psych/fp residencies. Primarily I want to do psychiatry, but I don't want to miss out on the "medical" side of being a doc, so I wanted to do FP as well.

Not to mention the entrepreneur inside of me sees great potential in running a combined FP/psych practice in a rural area.

And to think, all of this and DO schools still don't want me. 🙄

I think everyone voting in this poll should write down what they voted for, stick it in an envelope at home, and not open up that envelope again until you graduate from med school. It's amazing how many people completely change their minds once they go through the whole process and you really learn a lot about what you perceive certain specialties to be like, and what they actually are. I bet 4 years from now you'll look back on those letters and realize how far you've come.

Coming into school I had no idea what I wanted to go into. Now as I enter my 4th year I've decided on Neuro. Probably never would've guessed it as a premed.

The Ventura FP residency program has been tossed around a lot in the residency forums. Supposedly, it's one of the best, if not the best, for this sort of thing. Of course, that means that it's ridiculously competitive (for a Family Practice residency). Oh well...wonder how receptive they'd be to taking DO's? 😀

I used to say anything with "Interventional" in it, but I'm leaning more to Radiation Oncology atm. Still, I haven't had to deal with many terminal patients yet, so rotations will be a big factor.

IM seems like a great way to get grounded though. Then you can take a fellowship in RadOnc, HemOnc, GI, Cardio, etc. That's my default position.
