I'm actually applying to medical schools this year, but I thought this would be the best place to post this question. I was wondering if you all could tell me which specialties or parts of general medicine are the most and least competitive and the allow for the most and least amount of free time when practicing. For example, I have heard that Dermatology will allow for a good schedule with time for a family, but is very competitive to get a residency in. I would specifically like to know about Family Medicine, Pediatrics, and General Surgery, but information about all specialties is welcome. Thanks.

bro... you are so far from worrying about this. do the best you can in school and after you've completed some clinical rotations then worry about it. Also keep in mind that things are likely to change by the time you get ready to take the walk down this road. But to give you a little help...

and as far as derm goes, you need to be top 5, excellent boards, good-looking, etc.

family med and pediatrics are shoo-in programs that always have more spots than people applying.

general surgery is moderately competive.

nothing in life comes without sacrifice and perservance... you can go balls to wall in med school and enjoy the rewards afterwards, or you can have a more lax time in school and work a bit harder once you get out.
