I apologize if this is an obvious question. I am just starting to research dentistry.

My question is about specialties. If a you choose to go into a specialty after dental school, is there any actual school required for the specialty or is it just the residency?

Also how long are the residencies? What is the typical salary during the residency?

Do you feel that a specialty is worth pursuing?

Finally is there any training for becoming a cosmetic dentist?

Thanks.

Hi,

You can get a detailed information from the ADA Website. Currently, there are nine ADA recognized specialties. Programs varies from 3-6 years pending on the type. Some offer just the certificates, while others may offer Masters, PhD or MD degrees in addition. Cosmetic dentistry is NOT a speciality but a field of dentistry. Same thing applies to TMD or implants. Beware of dentists who call themselves specialists in field that are not recognized by the ADA. DP
