Specialty can do as GP?

I am a D1 student and don't even know what's different b/w gp and specialty except specialties study more.

Let's say you are opening your practice as a specialty. Can specialty run his practice both as a specialty and as a GP? Otherwise, there is a visible line that a specialty should not cover as referring his patient to a GP?

If you advertise yourself as a specialist and you're board certified as one then you can't practice as a GP (there may be some variation from state to state but I think this is the norm). Although the duality of pedo is that you're a specialist but also a GP for kids. I believe oral pathologists can work as a GP even though they're specialists, but I think that's because their speciality is mostly laboratory related.

Prothstodontics is basically a GP with extra training in terms of scope of procedures. Of course, they are generally very skilled.

Periodontists are basically GPs with 3 extra years of periodontal training. Endodontists spend 2 years doing only RCT which GPs do all the time. All specialists are basically GPs with extra years of training with exception of probably oral surgery. Hrmm?

I understand your point but ... perhaps you've missed my point. Prosthodontists have a typical practice as a specialist most similar to that of a GP. This leads to the problem of when a GP does something typically done by a specialist the GP is held to the specialist level such as in Proths(both do crowns while one is a specialist in crowns). While it is true that a GP may do some endo a GP may also place a crown and do restorative wheras an endodontist does not have these practices within typical duties when functioning as an endodontist(file and forget). Similar with perio- they focus on the gums and not on restorative whereas a GP could work on the gums as well as restorative. The GP carries a lot of terrain with the day to day practice where the specialist focuses on a small area and does it ad nausea.

Even if you could, once other GP figured this out, your referrals would stop ASAP.

No, I understand you point probably better than most on this forum. I worked as a GP in a pros office for 2 years. I am now in training to become a prosthodontist. What I am saying is that your understanding of what a prosthodontist is and does is incorrect and you should spend some time in a true pros office and you might see the difference.

What I am saying is that your understanding of what a prosthodontist is and does is incorrect and you should spend some time in a true pros office and you might see the difference.

i know a few prosthodontists personally and they run their practice as basically a GP practice with full range of restorative and esthetic tx. they even do hygiene. can you elaborate why browncrack is so incorrect? not trying to flame but my experience tends to make me agree with his point. obviously prosthodontists should ideally limit their practice to full mouth rehabilitation using fixed/removable prostheses, but by and large that doesn't seem to be the case.

I worked for a practice with a large scope. The 2 GPs did root canals, 3rd molar partial bonies, crown lengthenings, f/f dentures, etc etc on a daily basis. The prosth in the office did what I listed above in addition to implants and other prosthy-type stuff. They all trained extensively but the prosth, from my pov, was just a GP with extra training in one thing (implants). Granted they prosth was at the tail end of his career and did academics and cancer stuff in the early stages. Just because you specialize in one area, doesnt mean you forget all the GP stuff you learn in DS.

well, prosth has extra training in all of prosthodontics (fixed, removable), not just implants, but i agree with the majority of your post.

of course specialists don't forget dentistry learned in dschool, but i would say that prosthodontists are basically the only ones that in their practice perform GP procedures on a daily basis. almost all prosthodontists that i know or have heard of advertise their practice as "cosmetic and implant dentistry" providing full scope dentistry but then also proclaim themselves as prosthodontic specialists and/or diplomates of prosthodontics, which, i believe, is against the code of the ADA with regards to specialty advertisement/scope. i'm not an expert on the ADA rules/regulations, so anyone please feel free to chime in if i'm incorrect, haha.
