Greetings everyone, for all of the medical students in the forum, which specialty are you guys/ladies considering thus far? I am currently a 4th year medical student at Univ. of Southern Cal and I am trying to decide between Emergency Med and Internal Med..how about everyone else?

Anyone?? 111 folks viewed this feed, yet, no one is responding...come on people!!

Here TrojanDoc06, I'll start. I've heard all the "golden boys" (no offense to my ladies) go into cardiac surgery, so Cardiac Surgery it is. I may even go as far as to call it my passion. I've been lucky enough to have a renowned CT surgeon take me under his wing this summer, I'm blessed.

Doing CT surgery research has fortified that desire even more. I may even go as far as to call it my passion. Ok, for the sake of completeness, and for that of eliminating the element of naivety in my previous post; I must add that I've also heard that those "golden boys" may find themselves wanting as job opportunities diminish with the advents of Percutaneous technologies, but that doesn't scare me. Somebody has got to do it.

I start med school in 6 wks ... 😀

I really won't know for sure until rotations come around and I gain first hand exposure to the different fields. For now I have inclinations for interventional cardiology, CT, int. radiology and even neurology. I'm all over the map for now I guess.... but i decided for a while now to remain openminded and receptive to all specialties until I learn more about myself and the fields that greatly appeal to me...

I'm only pre-med, but I'm thinking orthopaedic surgery. Why is it that there are so few African - American orthopaedists? Especially black women

Hey thanks for replying Black Surgeon..for a minute there I thought I was talking to myself lol. Anywho, what exactly do you mean by "Golden Boys?" That term can be interpreted several different ways..just curious. Your passion for CT surgery is awesome man, hope all goes well with that. What school are you attending right now? Do you guys have a strong surgery program??

Hey Bernoull, I am very interested in pursuing IV cards as well..the only thing that steers me away is their crazy work hours..so Im also considering just doing general cards if I decide to go down the Internal Med route..

"golden boy" can mean anything. Feel free to uphold your own definition to the saying, but if I told you what my personal definition was, you would think me a masochist blinded by rapacious martyrdom in a quest for a perennial high in body and mind.

I attend a school in the Northeast region, I'd prefer not to say which one for the sake of retaining my privacy. I'm not an expert, but I believe what differentiates a strong surgical program from a weak one are the few power house attendings who are not only at the top in their field, but are also great teachers. By this standard, I would say yes to your question about the strong surgery program in pertinence to the CT surgery department at my institution. However, the answer certainly varies, with the dependent variables being the different surgical departments.

I'm only a prenursing student, but I am planning on becoming a midlevel provider down the road. Pediatric hemo oncology appeals to me most.

Look up Dr. Bonnie Simpson. She's a black female who is a boss in Ortho, she has come to my med school the past few years and has inspired some folks to go into Ortho.

I'm considering a lot (just a rising 3rd year) but rads, ortho, and cardio are my top interests. If I choose surgery - ortho, non-surg - rads most likely
