I'm curious what kind of exposure to specialty procedures dental students get depending on the specialty programs at their school. I know at Creighton specifically, they have no specialty programs, so really how much more are their students going to have the opportunity to work with the specialty cases (or will most of them just get referred out?), compared to another school like OHSU that has multiple specialties? I'm not dead set on a specialty right now, but I've been playing around with the idea of specializing if I find one that I feel passionate about, so I'm trying to get a feel for how much exposure I'd receive at different schools. Thanks for your input.

It's nice to have a school with a variety of dentistry fields. I've had to do observations here and there during my first year at U. Kentucky. So I've seen a bit here and there such as GPR, pedo, endo, OMFS, perio, etc. All of the staff have been so nice that they invite us to come in again. Also, we also get assigned rotations in the future. So we get plenty of exposure to the specialties. You never know if a field inspires you to go further so it's a definite advantage to attend a school that gives you this amount of exposure.

That's a great perspective, thank you. Can anyone speak about a school that has no specialty programs? What kind of exposure do you get in that case? Does the school teach more specialty procedures to the general dentistry students, or do you just not see much of specialty work at all?
