So which specialty are you leaning towards now as a Pre-Med anxiously waiting? (I know most of us will change our minds after rotations, and hate the specialty which we thought we will love, LOL so just for fun)

Me (I really want to): Orthopedic surgery

Probably End up: Emergency Medicine
 
Surgery. Trauma, ortho, ent all possible. I could see myself in the ER, or maybe even primary care. But right now I am leaning towards digging around in people's guts.
 
Really want: Neonatology...

If I have kids and stuff with no time for a fellowship: general pediatrics.
 
Hmmm....EM, neurology, IM-Endocrinology, family practice, psychiatry, PM&R....ack! It all sounds so interesting, I guess it'll come down to which I actually enjoy doing because they are all do different.

ent or g surg ----> cosmetic or prs fellowship (as of now ...)
 
I like the life style option of ortho surgery. Really interested in cardiac surgery too. Wouldnt mind digging around in people's guts like TT said.

Could see myself ending up EM though. Wouldnt complain...
 
Rural family medicine. It's all I've ever wanted to do.

Pediatric/Neonatal Neurosurgeon, Cardiothoracic Surgeon or Plastic Surgeon specializing in breast implants for famous women. But my greatest interest right now is in becoming a Trauma Surgeon who is also board certified in Orthopedics, Neurosurgery and Urology...so I never need help in the OR.

Funny.
 
Very interested in Family Medicine, Psychiatry, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Pathology. Most likely will end up in one of the three P's!

The two I'm most interested in at this point are EM and OB/GYN. My main concern regarding the second one, other than malpractice, is that women have babies at all times of the day and night. 😱

People get sick and come into the ER at all times of the day and night as well. It is nice not having call in the ER though for sure. Just that your shift might be nights for two days, then days, then afternoons, then days, then nights.... blah, blah, blah....
 
I came into this pretty open minded.

I think I would LOVE Orthopedics based on my love of the musculoskeletal system coupled with being a big fan of working with my hands, but don't think I want that lifestyle (living at the hospital)...so I've started to look a little more at PM&R.

That being said, I'm just ALMOST 12.5% done with med school, so I have a long time to decide.

Yes but you're already there rather than being at home sleeping and getting the call to come in when you were working all day. It would be hard to have shifts at different times but the no call is definitely appealing.
 
Wow! It's great to see the range of interests. Best of luck, everyone.

At the moment, I'm interested in many of the specialties, but I think I'll be best suited for primary care, especially FM or general internal med.
 
Orthopedic Surgery, Opthalmology, Cards, EM, General IM.

After working in a Children's Hospital for the last two years, I can't imagine not working with them but I would have to specialise so maybe Peds Psychiatry or Peds Infectious Diseases, maybe even Family Practice if I get tired of dealing with the parents :laugh::laugh::laugh:

Yeah, some parents suck. Makes you want to smack them when they bring their kid in that fell off the bed three weeks ago, broke his arm, and they still dont have a cast on and the kid has been just wearing the splint given to him in the ER three weeks ago....

If your not on call you don't have to go. Of course, many ob/gyns feel the desire to deliver their patient's babies. Talking to many obs, they say that desire changes with time. I want to be an ob/gyn anyway. I love it!🙂
 
PM&R, Family Med, IM/Ped, Ortho, Rads
 
I have no idea for sure, but I know that I want to incorporate OMM into my practice; but that could be anywhere I guess.

I'm partial to EM right now, but also might like IM, or a subspecialty of IM like CC/Pulm, or Cards. Some days, I think I'd do well with FM or even PSYC... However, I'm thinking that I'm probably not interested in surgical specialties, OB/GYN, radiology, pathology, opthalm., or derm.

Basically, I'll know more when I hit rotations...
 
PM&R for sure, specializing in musculoskeletal and sports med
 
Probably psychiatry or EM. Maybe pathology, radiology, or infectious disease. Definitely not peds, OB/GYN, or derm.
 
Infectious Disease, Nephrology or Rheumatology if I go into medicine. If I have great scores and like surgery, then Ortho or Nuro surgery.

Neurology is also tempting.
 
I want to be a diagnostician like house. I also want to be such a hardass I don't even need to worry about scrubbing, covering my mouth, etc. If I get cut off scrubs...even better.

I tend to like working with my hands, technology, and wearing pjs to work...so either some kind of surgical speciality, ER where I get a bit of a compromise, or Rads (where I do research)...I can also do the radiology mullet.

Damn...why does everyone want to do EM!?!? I guess I'm just gonna have to be extra good and beat you all down! 😉

Seriously though...I'm almost certain I'll stay in EM...but possibly critical care or trauma surgery.

I was just thinking the same thing. I love EM! Im a total multi tasker. Right now I couldn't see myself doing anything else.

It's a very interesting field that I hope to learn more about. I hope to possibly hang out with some practicing physicians, but not sure that will happen. One of our faculty members is a PM&R specialist and is very interesting to speak with...I hope to learn much from him.
 
Either Gastroenterology or Urology.

Not sure the competitiveness of the two, though (I believe GI is pretty tough to get into, but urology isn't too difficult...could be wrong, though, considering my sources.).

Urology is very difficult to match into
 
I am all over the board when it comes to specialty. One week I think one thing, the next week another. Thankfully I have some time to figure this all out, but I will try to use my rotations as much as possible to help me figure out those fields to which I am leaning. These fields are EM/sports med (I know, but the life style is freaking sweet and I just love EM), Ortho/sports med, Rads, Peds specialty. PM&R seems really cool too, I just don't know a whole bunch about it. The PM&R guy at school is AMAZING, so I will be talking with him a lot. I really like anatomy, so I am thinking of areas where I can utilize that. But who knows....I just know that Ob/Gyn is not my thing, along with Derm. Other than those, I am an open book.
