UVM... Dell D620... Cost... 1 USD when you graduate... or you could look at it as a 240 K computer... (it is given to you the first day of orientation)....

My school heavily recommended a Dell model which > 90 % of my classmates purchased. I got an Apple PowerBook even though the computer people at school said that it might not work for everything and they could not give me any support.

It has worked just fine. The only thing I couldn't use was some Mr. Sid Viewer thing that we used to view microscopic images for histology. Other than that, no problems at all.

Just get the computer that you want. Anything up-to-date should work well.

It's going to add a lot of stress to the dude's first exam if he is running around looking for a loaner when he discovers his machine is incompatable.🙄 Your school was more accomodating than some.
Some places have a decent amount of proprietary software that is going to require a machine with certain specs, and if you do a survey of med school websites, you will see that certain schools either require you to buy through them with everything installed, or require you to have a certain set of specs. The IT guys tend to have an easier time setting up systems that work for a single set of machines, and so that's what they do.
And if you (OP) aren't accepted yet, it's not good odds that you could get something that will universally satisfy everyone. Just get something really cheap for now (if you need a computer immediately) and wait on your real purchase until you are holding an acceptance and know the school's policy.

While this worked out for you, your school only reccomended a certain model. This is very different from a school that hands you a laptop during orientation that has already been charged onto a fee bill, which is what my school and some others do. We asked them what to do if we already had a laptop and there response was "well congradulations, you now own two". This is the type of situation the OP need to be wary of if thinking about buying a laptop before they know where they are going.

And to the OP my school gave us a gateway model that isn't for sale to the pubic (some special configuration deal). It cost about 2,000 including all the software licenses and the 4 year warranty (which covers me even if I throw it off a building, lol.) Wait untill you know where you're in to drop bank on a laptop. Get the cheepest thing you can get away with for now if your current computer is dying, if it doesn't need to be a laptop go with a desktop for now which are even cheeper.
