Hi! Can someone tell me the specific courses I need to take at UCI in order to get accepted to a med school? I am not a biology major, so I am clueless about which classes to take for med school. It would be helpful if its related to UCI, because I did do research online and all I found was: 1 yr bio, 1 yr chem, 1 yr organic chem, 1 yr english, 1 yr math, and 1 year biochem. Thanks.

U of Cali, Irvine? Is that the UCI you are talking about. I am not sure what you mean in your question, but basically all med schools require 1 year if bio, chem, ochem, physics, and the English you mentioned. Some require math and a couple require a semester of biochemistry. I hope that answers your question.

Holy crap but UCI makes it hard to figure this out. I've got about 20 minutes invested and I'm finding almost nothing. I even looked through the school catalog. Usually this takes about 45 seconds via google.

Here's the useless PDF for premeds: http://www.admissions.uci.edu/resources/career_preparation/UCI_Medicine_F11.pdf Apparently you're supposed to go see a bio sci undergrad advisor.

Good lord.

I suggest finding some UCI premeds here on SDN. Pre-allo?

Best of luck to you.

Thank you for your help guys!

I am talking about University of Cali Irvine.

That PDF is not useless at all! It is very informational. And I will try to talk to an advisor like you suggested. 🙂

UCI has some of the the most idiotic numbering/lettering methods for their courses so I don't blame ya for being confused. It's been quite a few years but let's see...

Bio:
Bio 93 (think of this as gen bio I), 94 (gen bio II), 97 (genetics), 98 (biochemistry), optional 99 (molecular bio). These are the majors level courses that satisfy pre-med/health requirements.

Keep in mind that these are meant to be taken as a series and are only offered one quarter a year, i.e. 93-94 is fall-winter, 97-98-99 is fall-winter-spring...so don't fall behind.

G-Chem:
Chem 1A, 1B, 1C, plus labs Chem1LB and 1LC
These are offered many quarters but not all, so plan accordingly.

O-chem:
Chem 51A, 51B, 51C, and labs 51LA, 51LB, 51LC

Physics:
Algebra/Trig-based: Physics 3A-B-C and labs 3LB and 3LC
or
Calc-based: Physics 7A-B-C and labs 7LA-LB-LC/D

And for English, the basic comp series Writing 39A-B-C should do it.

For additional reference, make sure to check out the catalog. The catalog can also be one huge mess so brace yourself:

Good luck. UCI has an excellent bio program so don't waste it.

Hi I am an incoming freshman at UC Irvine and I was just confused about what classes at UCI fulfill Medical School course requirements. Can anyone give me a rundown of the specific courses that will satisfy these requirements? (e.g. bio 93, chem 1a, etc.) Thank you.

Bio 93, 94, 97, 98, 99, 100LW for lab..and any of the other labs M1xx, E1xx, N1xx
Chem: 1A, 1B, 1C; H2A, H2B, H2C; 51A, 51B, 51C; H52A, H52B, H52C (all with labs)
Physics: 3a, 3b, 3c; 7a, 7b, 7d, 7e (not too familiar with this). (also, with labs)
I would suggest Humanities Core Course, as that is a "double whammy"–you get 4 units of writing, 4 units of humanities. Load up on the social sciences too, just so that you can satsify requirements for most.
I found being in the campuswide honors program to be very helpful in forcing these requirements so you not only have diverse education, but also you end up satisfying a lot of grad school requirements!
Feel free to PM me with any questions you may have!
