I'm an M1 and this summer I'm planning on completing public health-related human subjects research in Latin America (using surveys). My PI is based in that country but I do not have a PI here in the states/associated with my med school. I will be obtaining approval through an ethical review board in Latin America, but my question is whether it is important to also obtain IRB approval in the states, if I ultimately want to publish my findings. Basically, is obtaining IRB approval outside the US sufficient for publication in a paper that will likely be based in the US?

If your PI is in the country then you can just do IRB (or whatever the equivalent is) approval in the local country. For publication purposes, journals want ethical approval from the appropriate body, in which case the Latin American country would be just perfect. You'll be an American author on the paper.

Thank you for the reassurance!
