Do we need to know the frequency ranges of functional groups for the IR spec and the chemical shifts for H-NMR?

I haven't taken the real DAT but it seems to me you only need to know a few numbers and a couple of rules...I wouldn't be so worried about spectroscopy.

I wouldnt worry to much about spectroscopy. I had maybe one or two very easy questions. What group has a broad absorption that ranges 32-3600? I would memorize the main functional group absorptions and call it good. spend more time with reactions for Ochem thats for sure.

It'd be funny if they had carboxylic acid & alcohol as two of the answer choices.

I agree, You should atleast know OH group, aswell as a COOH.
