Public speaking is a prerequisite for many schools. In my opinion, it is an important prerequisite. You will give many, many presentations in school and you need to learn how to speak in front of an audience.

Relax kiddo. People here did not answer your question, but I know exactly what you are trying to ask. You don't care to take a speech class because it is a waste of your time, especially because you are busy with your REAL classes and also because you have given speeches in other classes THAT WERE NOT LABELED SPEECH (such as giving presentations in your science classes).

Although I took my speech class 10 years ago when I was obtaining my Economics degree, if I did not take it then, I would petition to pharmacy schools and tell them that I speak before audiences all of the time. I understand that pharmacy schools don't want timid people, but a speech class would do nothing for me at this point in my life. Give it a try, you have nothing to lose by requesting this to your schools.

That would highly depend on what school in Maryland you mean 😛
I go to UMCP; and Comm107 counts as a speech class.

COMM107 wasn't bad at all. I'm the type of person that would do all means to avoid speaking in front of a group of people but COMM107 increased my confidence in public speaking. I'm not going to lie, I still fear public speaking but I definitly feel more confident after I took this class. I just finished one of speech as a P1 and it was awesome.

Comm107 isn't bad (I'm taking it right now) but I have the worst teacher.

She shows up late, and her grading system is inconsistent. Luckily, I still have an A. I have a fear for public speaking too, and I had hoped that I would get something out of this class...instead I learned a million definitions and just presented two speeches. So I didn't really learn much on how to improve my public speaking.

No it's not. UIC is accepting the humanities classes that I took to fulfill their speech requirement. These were not "speech" classes but are still acceptable - at least at UIC.

It might just depend on the school.

My answers are not close to being superior. This website has helped me tremendously in finding out information in a big picture. However, I have noticed through applying to schools, each school can give you more specific information, but it is up to the applicant to ask these types of question to each school that he/she is applying to. No one on here could definitively answer school specific questions unless they work for the school in question.

In essence, this person may take a speech class next semester in order to satisfy the speech requirement for School ABC. However, if this person called the school and requested consideration to forgo this requirement because of other life experiences, he/she may not have to take it. You never know unless you call.
