Hey guys so I am going to be taking hte mcats in january 2010

There is this new speed reading course offered at penn state its $300 but they guarnatee an increase in about 3x your normal reading speed.

I am very skeptical about this and wanted to know if I should take the course?

I dont really have $300 to throw away but maybe if someone has taken a course similar to this and it has worked then maybe it might be an investment for me...

Please let me know what you all think. ... i feel like it may help for mcats

also they said comprehension will increase.

I don't think a speed reading course is really going to be helpful for the MCAT. If you've read the Examkrackers Verbal strategy (which is what many people recommend on here), they specifically show how the majority of time is used to answer the questions, not to read the passage - thus speed reading courses really won't help to increase your score.

I think you could put that $300 to far better use by buying practice materials/tests. However, you probably know this program you are talking about far better than I do, thus it's your decision at the end of the day.

Speed-reading is a double-edged sword. It cuts down on smaller words to get the gist of the big picture. Nots, ands, and other important MCAT relations can easily be dropped. I have a very high reading rate (~600-700WPM) simply from life. In the past, I took a speed reading course and went from 400 -> 800WPM. While reading fast is nice, I can tell you that you'll probably only save about 5-10 minutes at most with a higher reading rate. At my top clip, I finish with 10 minutes remaining the MCAT. The answers take the same, if not more time, when attempting to find the details required.

I would not recommend reading faster. Reading faster doesn't help you if you don't get the questions right. Get the questions right, and you won't need to read faster.
