Does anyone know what the fastest time for completing step one is. I really want to go into a competitive specialty . With everything getting so competitive I thought it would be nice to be able to have a 250+ score and earn it in under 3 hours. I really think that your time will become part of your score.

Sorry, but that still won't be enough. You'll also need to provide answers (A-E) for ALL the questions they DIDN'T give you on the test as well. Also within that 8 hour limit.

Do you want to take it fast so you'll have a few more hours to study for Step 2? . . . or so the Prometric peeps can time-stamp your Scheduling Permit, which you will put in your Dean's letter?

well put yourself in the shoes of a program director. you have two equally qualified candidates. both went to the best medical school both shared the top ranking at the best medical school, both produced research that changed the face of medicine, both have 250s on Step 1. Who are you going to pick?? I'm taking the student that got the 250 2 hours faster. Think about it.

plus I kinda want to start my step 2 prep at noon on the day i take step 1.

If you were any good at time management you would already have started studying for Step 2. What program director is going to want a candidate who can only attend to one thing at a time?

I think they prefer to use APGAR scores as the tie breaker.

Tie breaker would probably be "which candidate is not a dbag?" so working on that might be a better use of your time

I guess I will not get into a good program even if I take step one and step two(before the clinical years) same day all under 6 hours. My apgar was only an 8. FML

has human interaction gone out the window? good step scores, and the rest of your application, get you interviews not the position.

I've heard a few of the more prestigious programs have started conducting some sort of "personal interview" to be able to get a feel for the applicants... Just a rumor though!

Also, consider this... What if YOU made a 250 in 2:30 flat, but another applicant made a 210, but in JUST 1:03? Hmmm... I mean, think of how FAST he must be!

I've heard a few of the more prestigious programs have started conducting some sort of "personal interview" to be able to get a feel for the applicants... Just a rumor though!

Also, consider this... What if YOU made a 250 in 2:30 flat, but another applicant made a 210, but in JUST 1:03? Hmmm... I mean, think of how FAST he must be!

thats what we will need in the future when care must be provided to all but no increase in physicians, fast doctors with average accuracy.

yes but what about when getting an interview is nearly impossible, SPEED will be KING.

I actually just went into the hospital and started doing surgeries. The nbme showed up presented me with a license and congratulated me on my initiative. The real test is seeing if you are a big enough sucker to take the same exam three times... and pay for it.

It turns out that the new version of the "test" is actually a competition between you and the Prometric computer. If you achieve a perfect score using .5 seconds per question, you get to continue with your medical education. If you miss one question or take more than .5 seconds on a question, then that means that the computer would make a better doctor than you; you get the boot and the computer takes your place on rotations, Johnny5-style.
