How do I know if my speeding ticket is a misdemeanor? It was for going 88 in a 65 and I'm a resident of FL but the ticket was when I was in PA.

Look up to see if speeding tickets are classified as misdemeanors in PA, it's not that difficult. Also, don't worry about it as it won't keep you from an acceptance.

Im from PA. Speeding tickets are not misdemeanors here.

I'm actually having trouble figuring that out. Can you help? I'm not sure where to find out if it's a misdemeanor.

YAY! Thanks 🙂

I still would like to find a source for this, just because it makes me nervous and I don't want to put "No" if I really do have a misdemeanor. Since your from PA, any ideas about where I can get this information specifically?

Most states (and PA is one of them) set misdemeanor reckless endangerment at 30 over. You're good.

Google the PA traffic law....however I am 100% sure u dont have a misdemeanor. Either way, no way in hell would I be putting down yes for having a misdemeanor on a med school app for a speeding ticket. Kudos for being so honest lol!

Have a good attitude. Try to make the Adcoms laugh so you'll get accepted.

Not sure about PA law, but be honest, don't do it again. And if you have to explain, it's a good story at least. They'll remember you, and it's not that bad. Learn to drive an ambulance and it would be a better story (unless the ticket would keep that from happening).

I would double check with your local courthouse. In texas, 20 over is reckless driving..

OP, double check the misdemeanor laws for PA. In CA, 20 miles over the speed limit makes it reckless driving and is considered a misdemeanor.

If you have a speeding ticket that is a misdemeanor, you should put it down on your med school app. Schools can and have rescinded acceptances after a background check revealed an apllicant didn't list a misdemeanor from a speeding ticket (use the search function). It's not a big deal to have one on your app, but it's a big deal to be dishonest.

If you wanted to be absolutely sure you can get a background check on yourself or get a copy of your driving record. Even if it was a misdemeanor, if adcoms counted a speeding ticket against an applicant, there'd be some very empty med school classes...

There should be a way to check court records online. I had 1 speeding ticket and didn't know if it was a misdemeanor. Went on to my states online case lookup, searched my name, and nothing came up. When certiphi did my BC, it was the same.

What if you got a ticket for an expired tag that was one day expired. I just got a "work order", which meant I had to get a new tag. I had to pay for the sticker and a fee of $12 for paperwork, Again, I didn't get fined. I'm just curious.

So your registration was expired?

I'm currently at a misdemeanor in IL (anything above 30 is a MD and I just happened to be at 31.. f***ing pigs at the State Patrol) and managed to get a court supervision after 1000 dollars in attorney fees. It's currently listed as a guilty plea for a Misdemeanor but I got that withholding/plea (get out of jail free card?) and if I'm good for 6 months, my record gets cleaned.

Just to be clear, what doesn't show up on your driving record (because you got it dismissed, did traffic school, it's been several years so it was wiped, etc) may still show up on your background check. If you're really worried, you can pay for a certiphi background check first.

Again, I don't think speeding tickets are a big deal. I listed 4 dismissed speeding tickets on one app that specifically asked about them and still got accepted. Don't stress, but don't lie on your app.

Does the background check pickup on infractions on a driving record?

Should say it on your ticket/citation.

I don't think infractions are listed.

Yeah, at least in Michigan civil infractions don't show up on a criminal background check.

I got a traffic ticket a year ago (failure to yield) and about freaked because I thought I'd have to report it too on applications. Thankfully it wasn't a misdemeanor. OP, normally the ticket will have a spot where they list the category under which your crime falls. If not, google is your friend here!

If I perform a citizens arrest on someone I don't like for not wearing a seatbelt and they get a misdemeanor will their chances of getting into medical school decrease?

I used to live in a state where speeding tickets were misdemeanors. I have a lead foot but learned my lesson the first time I got a speeding ticket. I bought myself a Valentine One. I highly recommend it. 😉

And be honest if it's a misdemeanor. No one will care, especially if it's a speeding ticket.

If every body that has applied to medical school with a speeding ticket on their record was turned down we would have a lot less Doctors... seriously, don't worry about it its medical school not Trucker School.
